Biden: I Must Attend Mass for Pope Francis or “I’ll Lose My Soul”

From LifeNews:
Vice-President Joe Biden has put his foot in his mouth again, this time with regard to the controversy over his leading the American delegation to attend the installation of Pope Francis as the new Pope.

Never mind that Vice President Joe Biden has been rebuked by his own bishop over his pro-abortion views, President Barack Obama chose him to lead the delegation. That decision prompted an outcry from Catholics and pro-life non-Catholics alike because of Biden’s longstanding pro-abortion record. Some pro-life advocates have called for Biden to be prohibited from receiving communion at any ceremony for Pope Francis.

Now, Biden has said he plans to attend the celebratory Mass. He confirmed he will be attending a reception tonight with the presidential delegation to the inaugural mass with American officials based in Rome. Biden says he has to attend “or I’ll lose my soul.”

Biden’s comment came as he met at the Villa Aurelia with Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic, according to reporters on the scene.

“We invited the American cardinals to a reception,” Biden told Nikolic. “So unless I’m prepared to join the Eastern Orthodox Church, as a Roman Catholic, I’d better show up or I’ll lose my soul.”

[...]

In the interview with the Delaware News Journal, Biden continued to misrepresent the position of the Catholic Church on abortion in a way that has gotten him in trouble.

“But throughout the church’s history, we’ve argued between whether or not it is wrong in every circumstance and the degree of wrong. Catholics have this notion, it’s almost a gradation,” Biden claimed.

Not so, said Rev. W. Francis Malooly, the bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Wilmington.

He wrote in a letter to the editor that Biden “presents a seriously erroneous picture of Catholic teaching on abortion.”

“This is simply incorrect,” he said then of Biden’s interpretation. “The teaching of the Church is clear and not open to debate. Abortion is a grave sin because it is the wrongful taking of an innocent human life.”

It seems pretty clear to me that Biden has already sold his soul:

Obama Culture of Death Update™: Obama's HHS Makes Persecution of Church Official Administration Policy [UPDATED]

At Creative Minority Report, Patrick Archbold reports on HHS Secretary and dissident Catholic Kathleen Sebelius' full-frontal assault on religious liberty:
This is outrageous. HHS has issued its final ruling on exemptions from contraceptive coverage for health plans even in the face of religious obejctions. Too bad.

And in what passes for compromise for the lunatic secular left currently running the country, they will give religious groups an extra year to comply if you can PROVE you are really a religious group (which is difficult to impossible with these people), but comply you will...

The result of this is that religious persecution is now the official policy of the Obama Administration because many Catholic organizations simply will not comply and will therefore be subject to legal repercussion.

UPDATE
At National Catholic Distorter, Democrat and Obama shill Mikey Sean Winters expresses his "disappointment" that he and so many other left-leaning Catholics like Sr. Carol and President Jenkins just got played by the Obama Administration.

I'm pretty sure a whole lot of us have been saying for years that they were being played by Obama, but they were hearing none of it, willingly allowing themselves to be utilized by the Obama as an "alternative liberal magisterium" to the Bishops.

Besides, Mikey Sean seems far more concerned with the potential political fallout from Obama's declaration of war on the Church for Democrats who now might not fare so well among Catholic swing voters than he does with the fact that religious liberty has been placed in jeopardy.

UPDATE #2
The U.S. Bishops have vowed to fight the HHS edict, again, putting them and the Church on a head-on collision course with religious persecution:
WASHINGTON—The Catholic bishops of the United States called “literally unconscionable” a decision by the Obama Administration to continue to demand that sterilization, abortifacients and contraception be included in virtually all health plans. Today's announcement means that this mandate and its very narrow exemption will not change at all; instead there will only be a delay in enforcement against some employers.

“In effect, the president is saying we have a year to figure out how to violate our consciences,” said Cardinal-designate Timothy M. Dolan, archbishop of New York and president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.

The cardinal-designate continued, “To force American citizens to choose between violating their consciences and forgoing their healthcare is literally unconscionable. It is as much an attack on access to health care as on religious freedom. Historically this represents a challenge and a compromise of our religious liberty."

[...]

“The Obama administration has now drawn an unprecedented line in the sand,” he said. “The Catholic bishops are committed to working with our fellow Americans to reform the law and change this unjust regulation. We will continue to study all the implications of this troubling decision.”
Sr. Carol Keehan, who used her role as head of the Catholic Health Association to provide an "alternative magisterium" in defying the Bishops on Obamacare and undermining their teaching with respect to public funding of abortion, was, unsurprisingly, understated in expressing her "disappointment" (just like Mikey Sean) in the Obama Administration's decision to reveal her as being nothing more than a useful idiot:
Daughter of Charity Sister Carol Keehan, president and chief executive officer of the Catholic Health Association of the United States, voiced disappointment with the decision. Catholic hospitals serve one out of six people who seek hospital care annually.

“This was a missed opportunity to be clear on appropriate conscience protection,” Sister Keehan said.
Gee, thanks, Sis. Way to be strong in speaking out for the Church. If only you were as forceful in your condemnation of the Obama Administration's efforts to curtail religious freedom as you were in calling the Bishops liars for their efforts to protect the unborn from public-funding of abortion in Obamacare. Hope you're enjoying the souvenier signing pen.

Obama Culture of Death Update™: The Obama Administration's Anti-Life Attack on Franciscan University

Ken Blackwell, former Ohio Secretary of State and 2007 GOP gubernatorial nominee, asks "Will Obama Destroy Franciscan University of Steubenville?":
... [The Obama Administration] is attempting to crush The Franciscan University of Steubenville in Ohio. Mr. Obama’s HHS Secretary, Kathleen Sebelius, is trying to force Steubenville to dispense abortion-producing drugs and pay for sterilizations. This is a Roman Catholic institution. Such things are strictly proscribed by the Catholic faith.

Sec. Sebelius may be aware that Catholic institutions are required by faith and fidelity to their mission to uphold these principles. It is an indispensable part of their mission and their reason for being. To force a Catholic institution to violate the consciences of its faculty, students and alumni in this fashion is like forcing a Yeshiva to serve pork to Orthodox Jewish students.

This attempt to crush The Franciscan University of Steubenville is, tragically, not an isolated example. From the first days of the Obama administration, there has been a kulturkampf (culture clash) against Catholic institutions not seen since the days of the Iron Chancellor of Germany, Otto von Bismarck. It was Bismarck who attempted to put all churches and universities in Prussia under his hobnailed boot.

Writer Charlotte Allen wrote of the “Persecution of Belmont Abbey” by the Obama administration in 2009. There, too, liberal zealots were demanding that the Catholic school, founded in 1876, provide contraception, abortifacients, and sterilizations or face federal sanctions. This, according to the institution’s president, could lead to closing down the historic little college.

Chai Feldblum is a tenured professor at Georgetown University Law School. This is the oldest Catholic university in the country. Ironically, Feldblum, is also a homosexual legal activist. She was Barack Obama’s choice for the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. She told a panel at Family Research Council that if it came to a clash between what she calls gay rights and religious liberty, religious liberty must give way...

[Read the whole thing]
My Comments:
What the Democrat Party can't control, they will attempt to destroy. Whether it's violating the conscience rights of Catholic organizations by forcing them to cooperate in the Democrats' worship of Moloch or the coming persecution of the Church over recognition of so-called same-sex "marriage", expect more of this ... MUCH more of this ... in the future.

And, just as with Sebelius, it will be the dissident Catholics and other left-wing "Christians" who voted for this anti-life administration that will provide them cover and help to usher in a new era in persecution of those who hold fast to traditional Christian faith.

Obama Culture of Death Update™: Kill Babies or I'll Hurt the Poor

So, what does the Planned-Parenthood-loving Obama Administration do when cornered over the issue of public funding of the world's largest abortion provider? They hold the poor hostage, that's what. Go over to National Catholic Register to read Matt Archbold's masterful analogy:
It happens all the time in movies. The snarling bad guy is cornered by the good guys so he grabs some poor hapless victim, puts a gun to their head, and tells everyone to back off or he’ll hurt the poor hapless victim.

Well, believe it or not that’s what’s happening right now between President Obama and pro-lifers. And sorry, but Obama’s the snarling bad guy.

[...]

The Obama administration’s Department of Health and Human Services sent a letter to Indiana threatening to withhold billions in federal Medicaid funding for low income people if the state doesn’t agree to fund Planned Parenthood.

Just think about that for a second. Let the horror sink in. Sometimes it takes a few seconds for it to really wash over you.

Got it? Yeah, the Obama administration is saying the federal government will hurt the poor unless Indiana agrees to fund the killing of babies.

[Read the whole thing]
Later on, Matt notes that the Democrat Party isn't really in the business of helping poor people, as its Catholic defenders so often claim in order to justify their incomprehensible support for that organization. No, the Democrat Party is in the business of making sure abortion-on-demand is legal throughout all 9 months of pregnancy, including up to the very moment, during, (and, in the case of our President) after birth. It's their raison d'etre. It's the one issue the Democrats will go to the mat over EVERY TIME.

When Bill Clinton was President, he sold out just about every traditional Democrat constituency possible (from his support for and expansion of the death penalty, to his doctrine of forceful military intervention in world affairs, to his cozying up to Wall Street, to his signing of the Defense of Marriage Act, to his signing of welfare reform, to his signing onto the Republican tax cuts, to you name it). He sold out every traditional Democrat constituency, that is, EXCEPT for the abortion crowd. NOT ONCE did Clinton ever let his abortion allies down, which was especially and extremely evident in his twice vetoing very popular bills to outlaw partial-birth abortion. And, because of that, the feminists were, of course, all to willing to repay him by "getting on their knees" and saving his presidency during the Lewinsky scandal.

As for the most abortion-friendly Administration in history, not only are the Obama Democrats willing to hold the poor hostage to protect Planned Parenthood's public funding, they were also willing to (1) let health care reform die in Congress rather than agree to the Stupak language and (2) shut down the federal government rather than to allow the Pence Amendment defunding Planned Parenthood to be included in the final budget.

For the Democrats, the poor are nothing more than human shields behind whom they (and their Catholic apologists) hide whenever the topic of abortion is brought up.

(Hat tip: Creative Minority Report)

Addendum: By the way, DO NOT come on here and comment with some tu quoque about the Republicans. I am not a member of, and could not give a rat's @$$ about, the Republican Party. They have their own set of problems (including NOT being as willing to go to the mat against abortion as the Democrats are willing to in favor of abortion). This is a post about the Democrats. Defend them, if you can, on the merits, not by deflecting attention away from their egregious support for abortion by pointing out the other side's faults).

Obama Culture of Death Update™: A Compilation of President Obama’s Pro-Abortion Record

LifeNews has compiled a list of President Obama's numerous pro-abortion actions since he announced his decision to run for President 4 years ago:

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) — The following is a compilation of bill signings, speeches, appointments and other actions that President Barack Obama has engaged in that have promoted abortion before and during his presidency.

While Obama has promised to reduce abortions and some of his supporters believe that will happen, this long list proves his only agenda is promoting more abortions.

Obama Culture of Death Update™: Obama Would Rather Shut Down the Government Than See Planned Parenthood Lose Taxpayer Funding

LifeNews is reporting that, should Congress pass a budget that does not provide federal taxpayer funds for the world's largest provider of abortions, President Obama will veto the spending bill, thus shutting down the government:

The House approved a long-term bill weeks ago with the Pence Amendment to yank funding for the abortion business, but Senate Democrats rejected it. As negotiations move forward on a continuing resolution to fund the federal government for most of the rest of the year, Planned Parenthood officials are concerned the House and Senate will agree to a measure that revokes its funding.

If that happens, Obama could issue a veto that would force lawmakers back to the drawing board with a bill that could restore Planned Parenthood place at the funding trough.

Obama has already said he would veto the House-approved long-term spending bill because it [de]funds Planned Parenthood, saying House Republicans’ cuts are “unacceptable.” http://www.lifenews.com/2011/03/04/obama-would-veto-spending-bill-de-funding-planned-parenthood/

“Let’s not try to sneak political agendas into a budget debate,” Obama said. [ED.: Great idea!!! So, how about you quit trying to fund your pro-abort buddies with our tax dollars?] “If Republicans are interested in social issues that they want to promote, they should put a bill on the floor of the House and promote it, have an up-or-down vote, send it over to the Senate. But don’t try to use the budget as a way to promote a political or ideological agenda.” [ED.: Seriously? This is the "intelligent" and "thoughtful" president that partisan DemoCath hacks like Mikey Sean Winters are always going on about? Hey, genius, funding Planned Parenthood is a line item in a frickin' budget!!! If that line item is not funded in the next year's budget bill, that is a BUDGETARY act. It was the decision to fund an abortion provider in the first place that was "promot[ing] a political or ideological agenda". Cutting an unpopular item from the budget when the government is running huge deficits is EXACTLY what budget debates like this one are SUPPOSED to be about. Oh, I forgot. Obama's a Democrat. And to Democrats, once an item is on the budget, any attempt to remove it is part of an "extreme partisan agenda". But it's pretty clear who the extremist is here: the guy who would rather shut down the government (or let babies die in a closet) than see his abortion-providing allies suffer a legislative defeat of any kind.]

My Comments:

Nice priorities our president has. Let's see the allegedly "pro-life" Catholic progressives try to justify this one. Of course, they'll find SOME way to defend their Dear Leader and lay the blame at the feet of pro-lifers and/or the GOP. They ALWAYS do.

Who knows? Maybe, while they're at it, they'll be able to throw in a condemnation or two at the "out of touchness" of the "aging and increasingly marginalized white Bishops".

Obama Culture of Death Update™: Will Obama Pick Judge Diane Wood for Supreme Court?

Thomas Peters is reporting that President Obama may be leaning toward picking a radically pro-abortion judge to fill the Supreme Court vacancy left by the retiring Justice Stevens:
The buzz around DC is that Diane Wood is in the final run-off for President Obama’s next Supreme Court nominee pick.

She would be the worst possible choice for life issues, because as Bill Saunders
wrote for APP, she has the most radical views:
But probably no one, at least at the top of most short-lists, would elicit the fight that Wood would provoke. She is a sitting appellate judge (the 7th Circuit), and she has a record of rather outrageous opinions – she dissented against partial-birth abortion bans in Illinois and Wisconsin, and dissented against an informed consent law in Indiana that was nearly identical to one upheld by the Supreme Court in Planned Parenthood v. Casey. Wood even ruled that the federal law designed to counter organized crime, the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO), was properly applied against pro-life demonstrators – an opinion summarily rejected by the Supreme Court.
If Obama, who it is reported is “impressed” by Wood, nominates her to be the next Supreme Court Justice, he will only further cement his reputation as the most pro-abortion President to date. This even as the number of Americans who want to see Roe v. Wade overturned reaches a new high. The majority of Americans sure wouldn’t be impressed by Wood (or Obama’s) views on abortion and the law.
My Comments:
For those pro-life activists who I warned against going on the attack with Sandra Sotomayor's nomination: THIS is the person (should she be nominated) that you want to go after with EVERYTHING YOU HAVE.

Diane Wood is, indeed, a judicial radical with the intellectual bona fides to shift the Court SIGNIFICANTLY to the left. Our friend, Steve Dillard, refers to Wood as a "brilliant radical". She is manifestly pro-abortion, as her record shows. Wood would vote to strike down anything remotely seen as a restriction on unfettered access to abortion on demand at any time, for any reason, and using any gruesome procedure (such as partial birth abortion).

I'm not sure the GOP would have much success derailing the noimination, but they may be able to peal off enough Southern and Midwestern Democrats who want to make amends to angry constituents for their Obamacare votes to make it a little bit of a closer vote. And maybe there would be enough of a public backlash against Wood's radical views - assuming those opposing the nomination can successfully bring those views to the fore - that a big confirmation battle could pay dividends.

Obama Culture of Death Update™: President’s Faith-Based Council Punts on "Reducing Abortions" Yet Again

Tom Peters reports:
I have some simple questions to ask Doug Kmiec, Catholics United, Catholics in Alliance for the Common Good, Catholic Democrats, the editors of The National Catholic Reporter (most particularly Michael Sean Winters, a prominent liberal writer for them), and any high-visibility Catholic professor, pundit or blogger who claimed, time and time again last year, that Barack Obama would actively work to reduce the number of abortions.

They said he was the “pro-life” candidate. They said where republicans only paid lip service, Obama would deliver results. They said we, who did not believe his token promises, were guilty of undermining our best chance to “find common ground” on this issue since Roe v. Wade.

414 day in office and counting, and Obama hasn’t done squat to reduce the number of abortions in this country.

In fact, under his watch, the faith-based council has just
punted – again – on this issue...

[...]

Instead, Obama has been busying himself with pushing a health care plan that includes money for abortions, and will siphon billions of dollars into organizations like Planned Parenthood which run the abortion mills in this country.

I’ve written before that one of the most important virtues to have in politics is memory. We must remember what others have said, what arguments they have made, and then evaluate their long-term consequences. Through this process, we can come to an accurate evaluation about the trustworthiness of individuals and the arguments they make.

So my simple questions to the individuals and organizations mentioned above is: why were you wrong? Why has Obama done exactly what I (and others) predicted (nothing) and why has he not even tried to do what you promised he would do if we voted him into office?
...

Obama Culture of Death Update™: President's "Science Czar" on When Life Begins

At Creative Minority Report, Matthew Archbold reports that additional information has emerged on the deeply troubling views of the President's choice for "Science Czar":
John P. Holdren, director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy and Obama’s top science adviser, co-authored a 1973 book that said a newborn child “will ultimately develop into a human being” if he or she is properly fed and socialized:

“The fetus, given the opportunity to develop properly before birth, and given the essential early socializing experiences and sufficient nourishing food during the crucial early years after birth, will ultimately develop into a human being,” John P. Holdren, director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, wrote in Human Ecology: Problems and Solutions.

The specific passage expressing the authors’ view that a baby “will ultimately develop into a human being” is on page 235 in chapter 8 of the book, which is titled “Population Limitation.”

Obama Culture of Death Update™: White House Budget Director "Not Prepared to Rule Out" Publicly Funded Abortion as Part of ObamaCare

Patrick Archbold has the story at Creative Minority Report:
... But Obama has no interest in reducing the number of abortions. He lies. As Gateway Pundit points out:
Already this year, Barack Obama has signed several pieces of abortion legislation including funding foreign abortions. He also signed legislation to use taxpayer money to kill embryos in research. And, democrats are pushing legislation that will force healthcare providers to perform abortions even if it violates their moral or religious convictions.
But these efforts are tiny little white lies compared to the big fat lie. The lie that will dramatically increase the number of abortions in this country. Federally funded abortions via mandatory ObamaCare. Yesterday on Foxnews Sunday, White House Budget Director Peter Orszag admitted that this is the intent. They try to dance around it (aka lie), but this is what they want to do...

Human Events: "Abortion By Any Other Name Is In Health Care Bill"

(Hat tip: PewSitter.com)

From Human Events:
Obama may be caught in a lie -- a lie to the pope, no less.

Obama told the pope in a visit last week that he was committed to reducing the number of abortions. Yet his administration is helping Democrats craft a health care bill that one House Republican says amounts to the Freedom of Choice Act on stealth.

Under the current draft in the House, the bill’s health care coverage requirements for every individual -- set by the administration and known as minimum benefit standards -- don’t specifically mention abortion.

It sounds harmless, and it’s meant to.

But history's "most open and transparent" administration can effectively grant abortion “rights” by simply not mentioning the word.

House Republicans say precedent shows courts and administrative agencies assume abortion is included unless explicitly prohibited in the legislation. When Congress remains silent, it allows courts and agencies to, as Rep. Joe Pitts (R-Pa.) said in a statement, “mandate abortion.” It happened in the federal Medicaid statute, which required the famous Hyde Amendment to stop federal funding of abortions through Medicaid.

“Unless amended, …[the current] bill seeks to mandate abortion coverage for nearly every insurance plan in America,” Rep. Jean Schmidt (R-Ohio) said Tuesday. “Every American will be forced to pay through these services, whether through premiums or tax rates.”

Basically, as Rep. Chris Smith (R-N.J.) put it, if you pay premiums or taxes, you’ll be funding abortion. Smith also said the language of the bill as it stands would pre-empt state laws (such as parental notification).

So Obama plans to reduce the number of abortions by making them cheaper, more accessible, and penalizing insurance companies and employers that choose not to include the procedure in their health care coverage. Under the current draft of the bill, if individuals decide they want something other than the minimum benefit standards set by the administration, they have to pay a 2% fee. Employers pay an 8% fee.

***
Obama thinks health care should be a right. He thinks reproductive care is basic care. And his Secretary of State, speaking for his administration’s foreign policy, says reproductive health includes access to abortion. Obama makes you connect the dots, but it’s clear his health care legislation essentially grants a right to an abortion.

Rep. Phil Gingrey (R-Ga.), an OB-GYN for over 30 years, compared Obama’s bill to a play known as the end-around in football, set up to trick opposing defenses.

“It was sneaky, it was tricky, and it almost always worked -- it caught the defense totally off guard,” Gingrey said of the play’s success on his junior high football team. “That’s exactly what’s happening in this legislation.”

Later on, he said, “It’s really trying to pass the Freedom of Choice Act through this legislation.”

See also "The Silent FOCA: Vast Abortion Expansion Slowly Coming to Light".

My Comments:
The point is that abortion must be explicitly excluded from any government health care plan in order to ensure that the Hyde Amendment remains the law of the land (i.e. that federal tax dollars will not be expended to pay for abortions).

Obama Culture of Death Update™: President's "Science Czar" Supports Forced Population Control Measures [UPDATED]

Remember when President Obama, in lifting his predecessor's ban on ESCR, mocked the very notion of ethics and morality as providing limits on scientific inquiry? The President then went on to disband the President's Council on Bioethics, which had, apparently, been spending too much time (as one "progressive Christian" commenter opined in my comboxes) "focus[ing] ... on the out-of-date and nonsensical natural law theories supported by Catholic bishops."

But I suppose those actions are not surprising when one considers that this is the guy who Obama had in mind as his new "science czar":
Individual rights must be balanced against the power of the government to control human reproduction. Some people—respected legislators, judges, and lawyers included—have viewed the right to have children as a fundamental and inalienable right. Yet neither the Declaration of Independence nor the Constitution mentions a right to reproduce. Nor does the UN Charter describe such a right, although a resolution of the United Nations affirms the “right responsibly to choose” the number and spacing of children (our emphasis). In the United States, individuals have a constitutional right to privacy and it has been held that the right to privacy includes the right to choose whether or not to have children, at least to the extent that a woman has a right to choose not to have children. But the right is not unlimited. Where the society has a “compelling, subordinating interest” in regulating population size, the right of the individual may be curtailed. If society’s survival depended on having more children, women could he required to bear children, just as men can constitutionally be required to serve in the armed forces. Similarly, given a crisis caused by overpopulation, reasonably necessary laws to control excessive reproduction could be enacted.

It is often argued that the right to have children is so personal that the government should not regulate it. In an ideal society, no doubt the state should leave family size and composition solely to the desires of the parents. In today’s world, however, the number of children in a family is a matter of profound public concern. The law regulates other highly personal matters. For example, no one may lawfully have more than one spouse at a time. Why should the law not be able to prevent a person from having more than two children?

UPDATE
More on this despicable appointment from Joe Hargrave at The American Catholic: Obama’s Science Pick: A Violent Enemy of Human Life.
... with Obama’s selection of Dr. John P. Holdren to “Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy”, among a few other high positions – and with the recent revelations of what this man, along with his co-authors, advocated in a 1977 book called Ecoscience (of which I was entirely ignorant), I believe the benefit of the doubt has just been cut.

First, I’ll say that I regret for the sake of some readers that the most thorough analysis of this book is presently available on Alex Jones’ website Infowars. It doesn’t bother me at all, because the analysis comes with several photocopied pages from this obscure book. But I do understand that many people either love or revile Mr. Jones. Those feelings, however, shouldn’t get in the way of accepting what is obviously true. If this is all a major fabrication, they did a heck of a job.

The analysis presents the highlights before going in depth, and I will reproduce those here:
- Forcibly and unknowingly sterilizing the entire population by adding infertility drugs to the nation’s water and food supply.

- Legalizing “compulsory abortions,” ie forced abortions carried out against the will of the pregnant women, as is common place in Communist China where women who have already had one child and refuse to abort the second are kidnapped off the street by the authorities before a procedure is carried out to forcibly abort the baby.

- Babies who are born out of wedlock or to teenage mothers to be forcibly taken away from their mother by the government and put up for adoption. Another proposed measure would force single mothers to demonstrate to the government that they can care for the child, effectively introducing licensing to have children.

- Implementing a system of “involuntary birth control,” where both men and women would be mandated to have an infertility device implanted into their body at puberty and only have it removed temporarily if they received permission from the government to have a baby.

- Permanently sterilizing people who the authorities deem have already had too many children or who have contributed to “general social deterioration”.

- Formally passing a law that criminalizes having more than two children, similar to the one child policy in Communist China.

- This would all be overseen by a transnational and centralized “planetary regime” that would utilize a “global police force” to enforce the measures outlined above. The “planetary regime” would also have the power to determine population levels for every country in the world.

Obama Culture of Death Update™: Obama Disbands President’s Council on Bioethics

Joe Carter has the story at First Thoughts:
Earlier this week, members of the President’s Council on Bioethics were told by the White House that their services were no longer needed. President Obama’s decision was made and implemented in his typical style—gracious, pragmatic, and imprudent. According to the New York Times, the council was disbanded because it was designed by the Bush administration to be “a philosophically leaning advisory group” that favored discussion over developing a shared consensus. The new bioethics commission appointed by Obama will have a new mandate to offer “practical policy options.”

In other words, the Obama administration already knows where it stands on all those pesky moral issues like human cloning, chimeras, and euthanasia, and just needs a group to provide advice on how to implement its preferred policies. Whereas the previous councils wrestled with such questions as “What is the nature of human dignity?” the new one will most likely be addressing more practical policy options such as “How much should we pay women to harvest their eggs for cloning?”

The previous councils appointed by President Bush were accused of being ideologically biased. And so they were. Most of the members appeared to have a bias in favor of dignity and against giving free reign to technological innovations that alter our identity as humans.* The new council, of course, will also be ideologically biased, though likely in a more narrow way that is in line with progressive bioethics. (To predict where the new council will stand you merely have to ask, “What would
Art Caplan do?”)

To the electoral victor goes the electoral spoils, so Obama’s disbanding is neither surprising nor unprecedented. It is, however, lamentable, if for no other reason than that they will no longer be producing rich, nuanced works of philosophical reflection. Bioethics commissions have been around since the mid-1970s but under Leon Kass and later Edmund Pellegrino the council created a new literary genre of government documents: pythonic guides to policy.

Obama Culture of Death Update™: Obama Advisor Says “It is Not Our Goal to Reduce the Number of Abortions” [UPDATED]

(Hat tip: Creative Minority Report)

If the allegedly "pro-life" supporters of the President don't speak out forcefully against the administration for this, then they will have proven themselves to be the pro-abortion liars and hypocrites that Regular Guy Paul has always said they are:

Uttered at a meeting of abortion interest groups, pro and con, to discuss the sort of meaningless “common ground” to which Obama paid lip service at Notre Dame.
I noted that there are three main ways the administration can reach its goals: by what it funds, its messages from the bully pulpit, and by what it restricts. It is universally agreed that the role of parents is crucial, so government should not deny parents the ability to be involved in vital decisions. The goals need to be clear; the amount of funding spent to reduce unintended pregnancies and abortions is not a goal. The U.S. spends nearly $2 billion each year on contraception programs — programs which began in the 1970s — and they’ve clearly failed. We need to take an honest look at why they are not working.

Melody testily interrupted to state that she had to correct me. “It is not our goal to reduce the number of abortions.”

The room was silent.

The goal, she insisted, is to “reduce the need for abortions.”…

Abortion advocates object to the phrase “reducing abortions.” It connotes that there is something bad or immoral about abortion. Melody’s background as a board member of one of the most hard-core abortion groups in the country (Emily’s List even opposes bans on partial-birth abortion) sheds light on why she was irritated when that was stated as her boss’ goal.
[Read the whole thing]
My Comments:
So, in other words, it is as many of us always said: the goal is to do nothing more than implement the leftist policies that the Dems would have introduced anyway regardless of their impact on abortion, and to just ASSERT - without proof - that such policies reduce - not abortion itself - but rather the so-called "need" for abortion. And I suppose the "common ground" on abortion that we're all supposed to be finding is that we can either get on board with Obama's big government agenda (whether or not it actually reduces abortion) or else be seen as "culture warriors" who are "tied to the old failed ways of doing things" and who are, therefore, "obstructionists" to finding a "pro-life consensus".

What happens, then, when the policies prove themselves to have been ineffective at reducing either the rate or the number of abortions? What happens when the fears of those of us who have been critical of the Administration's pro-abortion policies are proven correct and the rate/number of abortions actually increases?

Will the so-called "pro-life" supporters of the President then admit to Catholic voters that they were sold a bill of goods? Will they admit to aiding and abetting the most pro-abortion President in history in duping Catholics to vote for him? I'm not holding my breath.

UPDATE (25 May)
Regular Guy Paul responds:
This comes as no surprise to me. If you've been paying attention, it should come as no surprise to you. The Obama Administration is pro-abortion. Abortion is not a bad thing, in their view, and they have no interest in discussing ways to end abortion, nor even to reduce the number of abortions.

It was a lie. Just like all his other lies. The people who claim to be pro-life and who supported abortion have been patsies. Suckers. Useful idiots, to use a term I saw over at Vox Nova to describe conservative pro-lifers.

The only question is, will the ostensibly pro-life Obama supporters claim to be surprised? Will they resent being shown, and so quickly, to be patsies, suckers, and useful idiots? Or will they continue to make excuses for their real savior? I expect no conversions. There is nothing, nothing Barack Obama can say or do that will cost him the support of Morning's Minion or Douglas Kmiec. He could sign FOCA, he could personally perform abortions, and his Catholic "pro-life" supporters would still be out there shilling for him...

Obama Culture of Death Update™: Administration Now on Record That Promoting "Reproductive Health" Equals Promoting Abortion Abroad

The Cathoholic reports:
... Today, Secretary of State Hilary Clinton essentially confirmed what pro-lifers have argued for years [that inclusion of "reproductive rights" and "reproductive health" into broader international documents was code for creating an international "right" to abortion]. In an appearance before the House Foreign Affairs Commttee, she primarily responded to questions related to U.S. foreign policy regarding Iran. However, an exchange with two pro-life congressmen elicited a revealing response from the new Secretary of State.

***
"Clinton was at her most emotional in batting down questions from Reps. Chris Smith, R-N.J., and Jeff Fortenberry, R-Neb., about the Obama administration's support for international family planning services. Smith and Fortenberry are among Capitol Hill's staunchest abortion opponents.

"Smith asked if the administration was seeking "in any way to weaken or overturn pro-life laws and policies in African and Latin American countries." Fortenberry asked: "Is forcing U.S. taxpayers to fund abortion in keeping with the highest values of the United States of America?"

"We have a very fundamental disagreement," Clinton told Smith, describing how she had seen women suffering in Africa, Latin America and Asia because of inadequate family planning and health care.

"It is my strongly held view that you are entitled to advocate, and everyone who agrees with you should be free to do so, anywhere in the world and so are we," Clinton said. "We happen to think that family planning is an important part of women's health and reproductive health includes access to abortion that I believe should be safe, legal and rare."

Now it's on the record: "reproductive health includes access to abortion."

***
[Rep. Smith later responded:] "They’ve been stealthy about promoting abortion, ..and emphasize other issues on which people can agree. Now this reveals unambiguously that the U.S. definition of reproductive health includes abortion."

Moral Arrogance

ESCR proponent Charles Krauthammer explains why he is glad he declined President Obama's invitation to attend the signing ceremony for the Executive Order lifting President Bush's ban on federal funding of ESCR:
... the ostentatious issuance of a memorandum on "restoring scientific integrity to government decision-making" -- would have made me walk out.

Restoring? The implication, of course, is that while Obama is guided solely by science, Bush was driven by dogma, ideology and politics.

What an outrage. Bush's nationally televised stem cell speech was the most morally serious address on medical ethics ever given by an American president. It was so scrupulous in presenting the best case for both his view and the contrary view that until the last few minutes, the listener had no idea where Bush would come out.

Obama's address was morally unserious in the extreme. It was populated, as his didactic discourses always are, with a forest of straw men. Such as his admonition that we must resist the "false choice between sound science and moral values." Yet, exactly 2 minutes and 12 seconds later he went on to declare that he would never open the door to the "use of cloning for human reproduction."

Does he not think that a cloned human would be of extraordinary scientific interest? And yet he banned it.

Is he so obtuse as not to see that he had just made a choice of ethics over science? Yet, unlike Bush, who painstakingly explained the balance of ethical and scientific goods he was trying to achieve, Obama did not even pretend to make the case why some practices are morally permissible and others not.

This is not just intellectual laziness. It is the moral arrogance of a man who continuously dismisses his critics as ideological while he is guided exclusively by pragmatism (in economics, social policy, foreign policy) and science in medical ethics...

Obama Culture of Death Update™: President Lifts Ban on Federal ESCR Funding

Not that this comes as a surprise:

(CNN) -- As President Obama reversed the Bush administration's limits on embryonic stem-cell research, he said scientific decisions must be "based on facts, not ideology."

President Obama lifted a ban that limited federally funded embryonic stem cell research.

The president on Monday signaled a clear shift in tone from the Bush administration on a broad range of scientific issues.

Obama overturned an order signed by President Bush in 2001 that barred the National Institutes of Health from funding research on embryonic stem cells beyond using 60 cell lines that existed at that time.

Bush twice vetoed legislation that would have expanded federally funded embryonic stem cell research. Those siding with Bush say scientific advances allow researchers to conduct groundbreaking research without destroying human embryos...

[More from CNN]
My Comments:
You know, this morning I almost made a prediction before the ban was actually lifted as to how some of the usual suspects would react. However, I changed my mind, as I thought it somewhat uncharitable to speculate as to how those with whom I disagree politically MIGHT react.

In retrospect, I should've just gone ahead with my post. Here's what I would've said:

And this is what I expect to hear in response to Obama's decision to lift the ESCR funding ban:

From Prof. Kmiec:
In the words of Dale Price, a "logic-impaired essay justifying the decision".

From Obamaphiles like Morning's Minion:
[sound of crickets chirping]

No, actually, I expect a short perfunctory statement of disagreement with the decision, followed by a long diatribe on how the Republicans are actually worse, and how they've allowed Calvinist-inspired theology to infect everything from tax and spending policy to our relations with Israel and the Middle East.

From those who are not necessarily Obamaphiles (at least they won't admit it), but who are loathe to criticize him or any other Democrat for fear that the GOP might look better by comparison (they won't):
A statement of how this isn't really Obama's policy but is merely an extension of President Bush's ESCR policy; they will try to make Bush's allowance of a paltry amount of funding for stem lines ALREADY in existence [to which I strongly objected] the moral equivalent of President Obama's actions today, despite the fact that Bush banned federal funding for the destruction of additional embryos and - at great political cost to himself - twice vetoed legislation that would have provided said funding.
Well, I'm quite sure that Prof. Kmiec will very soon oblige us with his vomit-inducing apologetics on behalf of the Administration's new policy. But, in the meantime, the other folks have not failed to disappoint. Examples here and here.

Damn, I wish I'd gone ahead and posted that this morning! I'd have looked quite prescient at this point. That's what I get for giving people the benefit of the doubt.
