American Papist's Open Letter to Prof. Kmiec

(Hat tip: Opinionated Catholic)

Thomas Peters at American Papist has penned an open letter to Doug Kmiec (on behalf of the “right-wing Catholic blogosphere”).

Fr. Z and Jeff Miller also hit on Kmiec's Commonweal piece.

And Catholic News Agency has more about the Catholic blogosphere's response to Kmiec's "poor me" criticism.

UPDATE
In the comments to this post, Matthew Archbold of Creative Minority Report has given this blog one of the finest compliments I've ever received:
I can't help but think Kmiec is talking about you. I honestly can't think of anyone who took him on more piercingly than you. Great job. Hopefully your criticisms wake him up.
Thank you, Matthew. Yet, I'd be flattering myself to believe that Prof. Kmiec would get himself worked up into such a lather over a small-time player like this blog.

Responding to Chris Blosser's jesting comment over at The Cranky Conservative that Prof. Kmiec was probably compiling negative combox remarks about him for the second volume of his memoirs of the 2008 elections, Don McClarey expressed his hope that he could provide him with a whole chapter all by himself.

If Matthew is correct in assessing this blog as the primary thorn in Prof. Kmiec's side, I'm holding out for a book dedication.

Matthew,

Thank you. That's one of the nicest compliments my blogging has ever received. Truly.

Yet, I'd be flattering myself to believe that Prof. Kmiec would get himself worked up into such a lather over a small-time player like this blog.

Jay,

Whether Prof. Kmiec reads your blog or not, please understand that many of the rest of us do and appreciate your efforts.

If Kmiec is looking here or at other blogs for approval or disapproval is his problem and a mistake. Our judgment should not be his primary concern. Our judgment is of this world and will matter not in time.

If Kmiec isn't reading your blog, Jay, he should be.

Jay,

Your blog and the CMR have been very good at calling out Blessed Kmiec the Self-Justifying Martyr on his bathos over the "surprising" fact that rightist Catholics might actually disagree with the concept that supporting a virulent pro-abotion candidate would lead to less abortions through socialism. I believe the Church has condemned socialism as much as it has abortion, in recent history.

To that end, I hope Kmiec is writing about you both, as it only demonstrates his thinking: instead of accepting the criticism as valid, he instead decides to view it as "hateful right-wing speech," so as to avoid the issue altogether. His snide and condescending sense of intellectual superiority dressed up as pious Catholic morality is disgraceful. Its amazing how much he can self-justify.

In light of recent writings of his, including the fact that he can't be bothered to reply to my email response to his email, I'm increasingly forced to reaffirm my position.

I've also linked to you, good sir. Keep up the good work!

It's actually a great article. Think of all the people out here who have spent so much time wondering, “Have there been any obscure bloggers somewhere who talked bad about Douglas Kmiec”? Well, thanks to Kmiec’s selfless and thankless service in writing that Commonweal article, no one needs to spend countless hours reading through every result for “Kmiec” on Technorati or Google Blogsearch. Doug Kmiec has thoughtfully done that on behalf of all of us, and he is able to list all of the Kmiec trash-talking that has occurred anywhere on the Internet. From now on, anyone who is troubled by the pressing question, “Did anyone say bad stuff about Doug Kmiec before January 2009,” can just look up that Commonweal article and rest easy.

This is yet another reason that Commonweal stands apart as the intellectual and literary magazine that it is.
