Doug Kmiec Soon To Be Sorely Disappointed

Obama desperately needs to win over (and keep) Hillary!'s "women vote", so any "compromise" that Doug Kmiec anticipates on the issue of abortion is wholly illusory.

From Noah Millman (hat tip: Feddie):

... I don’t know if I’ve said this before, but Doug Kmiec would do well to admit that he has backed a ticket that will be absolutely uncompromising in its support for abortion rights. There is no chance whatsoever that Obama will make the slightest gesture in the direction of moderation on this question, and there is no chance that any appointments to the court will not be litmus tested on this question. Bank on it. He showed no inclination to do so before, and now he has powerful political reasons to be absolutely doctrinaire on this question. There are other places where he can bend – gun rights is, I think, the most likely and the most important – but not here. Yes, that gives a (mild) advantage to McCain on this question, but Obama cannot afford heterodoxy here...

(emphasis added)
And from Daniel Larison (hat tip: Kyle):

The most unfortunate thing is that Prof. Kmiec has consistently taken Obama at his word that he respects pro-life views, which has given Kmiec the false hope that Obama will take pro-life arguments seriously to the point of embracing them or implementing pro-lifers’ proposals in the context of retaining legal abortion. What matters in Kmiec’s case is his intent, and clearly he is not supporting Obama in order to promote a grave evil. The mistake that Kmiec has made, which is the same mistake that many pro-life Obama supporters are making, is to believe that Obama has any intention of following through as a matter of policy on his rhetoric of listening to all sides and building consensus.

I would like to know when the obvious is going to happened.

When is he to be called to task to explain how it is consistent to go from being an advisor ot Mitt Romney to endorsing Obama.

Is he saying that in this election the two best Catholic Choices were Obama and Romeny. Perhaps he can share with us at some date how he made this jump and what traits Obama shares with Mitt and how McCain did not come in second place to the guy he was so behind and came close to becoming the GOP guy.

What matters in Kmiec’s case is his intent...

Really? His intent is what matters?

Didn't some wise fellow, Buddha or somebody, once teach, "by their fruits ye shall judge them"?

What are the likely "fruits" of Kmiec's support of Obama? Is it difficult to predict?

I'm sorry, Jay, I'm not done.

His intent is what matters? Supporting the most pro-abortion nominee in history is OK because he means well?

Isn't that liberalism at its worst?

Doug Kmiec supports the guy who's sorry that he let slip the chance to prevent a ray of hope that Terri Schiavo's life might have been prolonged, the guy who fought the bill to protect babies who had been born alive, the guy who argued in favor of partial birth abortion, the guy who's promised to overturn every state abortion restriction with a federal law to guarantee abortion on demand, and it's OK because Kmiec's heart is in the right place?

Will Daniel Larison say the same thing about someone who shoots an abortion doctor because his intent is to protect innocent lives from being lost!?

I fail to understand the reverence that Doug Kmiec still commands among otherwise intelligent and orthodox Catholics. Kmiec's warped logic and wishful thinking seems to be contagious.

Judge him by his fruits!

Obama has proclaimed on more than one occasion his zealous support of the Freedom of Choice Act and if given the opportunity would sign it:

Freedom of Choice Act - Declares that it is the policy of the United States that every woman has the fundamental right to choose to: (1) bear a child; (2) terminate a pregnancy prior to fetal viability; or (3) terminate a pregnancy after fetal viability when necessary to protect her life or her health.

Prohibits a federal, state, or local governmental entity from: (1) denying or interfering with a woman's right to exercise such choices; or (2) discriminating against the exercise of those rights in the regulation or provision of benefits, facilities, services, or information. Provides that such prohibition shall apply retroactively.

How somebody like Kmiec can entertain the slightest hope that Obama is willing to budge an inch on abortion is mind-boggling.
