British Prelates to Press for Repeal of Act of Settlement

From Catholic World News:
London, Jul. 5, 2007 (CWNews.com) - Catholic Church leaders in Great Britain will press Prime Minister Gordon Brown to repeal the Act of Settlement, which prohibits Catholics from the throne, the Guardian reports.

The Guardian said that Cardinal Keith O'Brien of St. Andrew's, Scotland, plans to press for repeal of the legislation, which was enacted in 1701. The legislation prevents anyone who is a Catholic, or marries a Catholic, from assuming the British throne.

Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor of Westminster has pointed out in the past that the law would allow an heir to the throne to marry "a Hindu, a Buddhist, anyone-- but not a Roman Catholic."

I was interested to note that one of the prelates had stated that repealing the Act of Settlement -- which prevents a Catholic from ascending the English throne -- is an inherently democratic thing to do.

I'd be even more impressed if they'd give back all the cathedrals, churches, abbeys, monasteries, etc. that Henry VIII stole.
