Weekly Standard to Pro-Lifers: Shut Up and Eat Your Peas
Recall that a few weeks ago I wrote that the chickenhawks over at The Weekly Standard (or, as I sometimes refer to it, The Weakly Sub-Standard) seemed at least implicitly to be pushing hard for the 3 candidates the magazine dubbed "Metro Republicans" - i.e. Republicans who weren't so "red state", with all the social conservative "baggage" that that entails.
Now, Fr. Martin Fox notes that the neocon mag has explicitly joined the chorus of those who are willing to sacrifice pro-life principle for political expediency:
In this article, the Weekly Standard comes out of the neo-con closet on the abortion issue: time to throw the prolifers under the bus. Please go read all of Fr. Fox's excellent commentary.

It is all part of the fever that infects more and more folks as elections near: the sense that winning the next election is so supremely important that more and more must be thrown overboard in order to do it. Thus the condescending lectures that are being given these days to various conservative folks that they should just get over their concerns, and get on board the Giuliani (or Romney or McCain or fill in your own name) bandwagon.
It perpetuates the lie -- I'm sorry, that's what it is -- that somehow, the "litmus test" of the 100% prolife position is an albatross for the GOP--that the GOP would be better off if it weren't forced to nominate prolife candidates for president.

The Weekly Standard article is one of many showing up here and there, trying to sell conservatives on Giuliani. It reminds me of the scene in A Man for All Seasons, where one of the nobles got irritated with Thomas More (this is a paraphrase): we've all sold out, it wasn't so hard--why do you have to be so prissy?

No surprises. In the aftermath of September 11, Jonathan Last, then-editor of their weekly e-letter, wrote that "nothing" was more important than the War on Terror. When I wrote him stating that we shouldn't pit that issue against others that are at the very least equally compelling, i.e., abortion, he dismissed my argument out of hand. I asked to be removed from his distribution list and he responded, "With pleasure." And that was end of my affection for that magazine after subscribing for over six years.
