"Hoarders"? "Real Housewives"? "Pawn Stars"? "The Kardashians"? "Jersey Shore"? "Swamp People"?

Really? Watching dumbasses doing dumbassed things is REALLY how people want to spend their time? Read a book or play a boardgame, dammit!

I weep for our culture.

  1. Whew! Dr Who wasn't on your list!

I completely agree with you - those '(un)reality' shows are a total waste of time. And inane. They contribute to the accelerated dumbing down of our nation - but I think they still have a ways to go before they catch up to the average public school system.

Although I must admit that I have watched 'Kitchen Nightmares' from time to time (the UK version, not Fox).

  2. I watch and enjoy Pawn Stars. On almost every episode there is a historical artifact brought in which I learn something about. I like the restoration efforts, the methods of determing the authenticity of items and what gives them away as fakes. I have many salesmen in my family, and have been one myself and also enjoy watching the closing techniques.

  3. I may have been overbroad in lumping "Pawn Stars" in with the rest (although the name of the show, alone, is sorta sleazy). But I don't like ANY so-called "reality" shows, not even the cooking shows like "Kitchen Nightmares" and "Next FOOD Network Star" that my wife adores.

Yeah, I'll grant the gratuitous sleazy title. And I dislike most reality TV shows simply because so much is contrived. In "Hell's Kitchen" that chef is not that abrasive in real life, so I count it as lying. "Cake Boss" is full of phony moments, and when he made a cake for a same-sex "marriage" ceremony without a hint that anything was wrong, I turned it off.

I do have some sympathy for the "dangerous jobs" shows like Ax Men. Even though the drama is ginned up sometimes and even the participants ham it up for the camera sometimes, I like the fact that there are still occupations left on earth largely unsullied by feminism.

I remember reading a letter of Tolkien where he reports that an interviewer wanted to get a picture of him posing like he was working on the typewriter. He said he never typed with people in the room and wouldn't do the picture because it would be bogus. A small thing, but hats off to Tolkien for not indulging phoniness.

  5. The Bachelor/Bachelorette is the one that drives me most insane.

And now that we have all Casey Anthony all the time, Luddism is very appealing.

  6. I like Swamp People. Sure its fake. Even the stars know its fake. I heard one call it a "Bad Cajun movie." So they sucker the Yankees. Good on them.

Met Bruce the other day. As nice a person as they come. Chatted for a while like we were best friends. Got a picture with him with the whole family. Will send to you if you want.

At this point all I can say is "Choot em."
