U.S. Catholic Bishops: "You Can't Reduce Abortions by Promoting Abortions"

(Hat tip: Rich Leonardi)

Yes you can reduce abortions by promoting abortions. Simply consider the extreme case: abort every baby for the next 60 years and the abortion rate will promptly drop to 0.

If you promote abortion within communities that are prone to it anyway, you will eventually reduce their numbers to the point that there will be fewer abortions. However, if you restrict but do not ban abortions, you may see population growth and a steady increase in the number of abortions, though not 'per capita.'

So the argument is that promoting abortion reduces abortion because eventually abortion will decrease in the long run since more people will be aborted in the short run?

I like the ad. It's nice to see the USCCB and some of the bishop's finally standing up for life. This is a direct attack on so-called Catholic Democrat organizations that claim to be for "reducing" abortion, but of course, are radically in favor of Roe v. Wade and oppose any and all restrictions on abortion.

I agree, Boethius. Excellent ad aimed directly at the heart of the Kmiec's of the world. This, coupled with Cardinal George's take-down of the "common good" fallacy, shows that the Bishops aren't going to stand idly by as left-leaning Catholic groups try to subvert the Church's pro-life teaching while trying to put "Catholic" lipstick on their "progressive" agenda pig.

This is about as contemptuously a way I've seen a person talk about our bishops. Truly incredible.

Discalced Yooper,

I agree with you that the Bishops have been stalwart on the pro-life issue, and that they aren't late-comers to the cause of the unborn. My agreement with Boethius was on liking the ad.
