Oh my, a politician lying (gasp) now I've seen it all!

This is similar to Hilary and sniper fire dodging, but on a smaller level. All in all, it’s pretty minor.

What it points to is the need of these people to self-aggrandize and make themselves (1) a bigger part of the narrative than they really are or (2) seem more courageous and/or virtous than they really are - just like Slick and Arkansas church burnings, Algore and inventing the internet or the story of his father showing him slave chains in an old house in Tennessee, Kerry and Christmas in Cambodia, and (as you point out) Hillary in Bosnia.

What's funny is that, not only are these lies completely unnecessary to creating the candidate's public persona, but we rarely see this sort of thing from those on the right (although some people accused Reagan of embellishing his stories).

You're right that in all of the cases I've mentioned this tendency toward embellishment is pretty minor. Except for the fact that it points to a narcissism that seems endemic to left-liberal politicians running for President.
