Washington, Nov. 5, 2007 (CWNews.com) - Former Illinois Congressman Henry Hyde received the Medal of Freedom from President George W. Bush on November 5 for his leadership in the American pro-life movement and the fight against Communism.
Hyde-- who was unable to attend the White House ceremony because he is recovering from heart surgery-- was one of 8 recipients of the Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian award conferred by the US government.
The other recipients included Cuban democracy activist Oscar Elias Biscet, economist Gary Becker, and C-Span television network founder Brian Lamb.
Henry Hyde, a devout Catholic who served in Congress from 1975 until his retirement in 2006, was cited by the White House as "a powerful defender of life and a leading advocate for a strong national defense and for freedom around the world."
