Retired Toledo Priest Shows "Appreciation for Vatican II"
A letter to the editor from a retired priest of the Toledo Diocese appears under the caption "Appreciation for Vatican II" in this month's Catholic Chronicle.
The letter begins:
Do we, as Christ's church, value what the Fathers of the Second Vatican Council cultivated and enhanced? And concludes:
How can we be confident our younger fellow Catholics will treasure what the Council Fathers gained for them? Maybe all we can do is offer prayerful thanks to God and tell stories of the efforts of Blessed John XXIII, Paul VI and the Council Fathers. I hope and pray we do.What might have brought this on? It couldn't have been a couple of documents recently issued from the Vatican, could it?

Perhaps the best way to preserve respect for the Second Vatican Council and the improvements made by it would be for its proponents to acknowledge and repent of the excesses, abuses and dissent that followed its implementation, a renewed emphasis on the actual contents of the council documents, and an explicit repudiation that the pro-gay clerical culture that so often seems to accompany partisans of the "Spirit of Vatican II".
Or not.
I'd say the best way would be to read the documents of Vatican II. All too few of the spirit types haven't.
I remember, back in the 70's, people were always telling me this, that, and the other thing that Vatican II had supposedly done. Never saw any of it in the documents.
