California Battle Over Pro-Life PlatformMy Comments:
Raises Doubts About Giuliani
CHICAGO – California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger will urge Republican leaders gathered in California this weekend to remove all pro-life references in its party platform and instead focus on other issues where he believes Republicans have more consensus views.
The move by Schwarzenegger raises questions about whether presidential contender Rudy Giuliani, also a stanch supporter of abortion rights, would act similarly to gut the national GOP platform if nominated for president.
Fidelis President Brian Burch stated, “Candidate Giuliani has cleverly softened his radical pro-abortion views since declaring his intention to run for the presidency, yet his candidacy closely mirrors that of Governor Schwarzenegger who is now calling on Republicans to abandon its commitment to protecting the right to life.”
“If nominated for president will Rudy Giuliani preserve the pro-life plank in the national Republican platform? Pro-life voters need to ask the hard questions now before it’s too late, as many voters in California are now learning,” continued Burch.
The Associated Press reported yesterday that Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger wants the state Republican platform “boiled down to as little as a single page focusing on lowering taxes, limiting the size of government and building a strong national defense.” Schwarzenegger is circulating a letter which says, “We have found long recitations of detailed policy statements are unwieldy, hard to follow and for the most party unread by the very people we want to share our core beliefs with.”
The current California Republican Platform, like the national GOP platform, explicitly opposes abortion, partial-birth abortion, and calls for protecting unborn human life. The California platform states, “The CRP affirms its support for the protection of innocent human life at every stage, from the pre-born to the elderly, the infirm and the disabled.” Later it states unequivocally, “we support the reversal of Roe v. Wade.”
“Rudy Giuliani, like Arnold Schwarzenegger, is proudly pro-abortion, and poses an enormous risk to pro-life Republicans who have worked within their party to make this issue a priority. Governor Schwarzenegger is at least being consistent – he supports abortion, and is using his position as the leader of the California Republican party transform the platform. Pro-life Republicans evaluating the current field of presidential candidates would be wise to observe what’s happening in California,” said Burch.Support Fidelis Today! - CLICK HERE
As I wrote here yesterday in drawing the same connection between Schwarzenegger and Giuliani, this is what happens when pro-lifers set aside their convictions to vote for a candidate because "He can win."
