Brownback Proposes Ultrasound Before Abortion

Sen. Sam Brownback introduces another pro-life bill:
A woman would have to undergo an ultrasound and be given the option to view the images before receiving an abortion, under a proposal from Kansas Senator Sam Brownback.

The Republican presidential hopeful introduced the Ultrasound Informed Consent Act Thursday. It would require a doctor perform an ultrasound and then share the results with the woman before performing an abortion.

“It is necessary and right to provide a woman seeking an abortion with all the available information so that she may make the most informed decision possible,” Brownback said in a statement. “The Ultrasound Informed Consent Act would ensure that women have access to important information.”

Brownback says the measure puts the requirements solely on the doctor, not the woman. He says a woman may refuse to view the ultrasound images. Several states including South Carolina and Texas have recently pursued similar legislation.

“I am hopeful that this bill will inform women and will cause a deeper reflection on the humanity of unborn children," Brownback said. "It is important to promote a culture that values life in all stages.”
