August is Breastfeeding Awareness Month ...

... which provides me another opportunity to post one of my favorite pieces of religious art, which I was fortunate enough to get to see in person earlier this week.

Thanks for posting this--twice! I linked to your original post on my blog. I have started posting fine art representations of the Blessed Mother breastfeeding, and was saving this one as my favorite of all the ones I have even seen. You gave me the excuse to post it! Personally, beyond consideration of the artists' representation, I am curious as to what these representations of Mary breastfeeding have to say to us about ideal motherhood (sacred motherhood) and breastfeeding, and the much-disputed issue of breastfeeding and modesty.

And of course, this is just a phenomenal piece of sacred art. Did you know that El Greco painted two other variations of the same scene?

I did know that, but this is definitely my favorite.

I'm a big El Greco fan.

Most beautiful, I was fortunate enough to find a silver overlaid icon of our lady of the milk and was able to get it imported from Italy for my wife one year, will have to post it up sometime.

Thanks again,
Under the Mercy,
Matthew S
