Vox Nova on Voter's Guides

Those of you who have read this blog for a while know that, as last year's elections approached, I provided quite extensive coverage (see the links at the bottom of this post) of the "Catholic voter's guide wars" that seem to take place in parishes and dioceses across the country every couple of years.

Over at Vox Nova, contributor M.Z. Forrest discusses his antipathy toward Catholic voter's guides.

He isn't making much sense.

Vox Nova is a left-of-center blog at best. A socialist-liberation-theology blog at worse.

I wouldn't give those any sort of plug at all. Just my two cents worth. I know a couple of those bloggers (from Houston) and they are the most egotistical and heterodoxical couple I have ever met.

I'm assuming you're talking about Michael and Katerina. Let me just say that your impression of them differs from mine.

Certainly opinionated. Often brash, which could be mistaken for a lack of humility. But that doesn't translate into egotism.

But I have never read anything from either of them that could be described as remotely heterodoxical. Can you illuminate as to which specific Church teachings you believe they dissent from?

As for Vox Nova, there are certainly a number of contributors who are center-left to way-left. But there are also a number of more conservative contributors as well.

What, for example, is so objectionable about M.Z. Forrest's post on voter's guides to which I have linked? Although I disagree with various aspects of his post, I don't find anything particularly "left-wing" or otherwise troubling about it.

Jay,

The blog is left wing, not the posting.

As far as Michael, he is obtuse and has a closed heart. I agree with most of what he writes, but when it comes to Catholic social doctrine he is way off base. Advocating an active role of government in the daily affairs of Americans at the worse, hoping for a neosocialist state at less worse.

He also claims that Dorothy Day is a SAINT. He also, along with Kat, cite imaginary and non-existant catholic documents to back up their claims. When pinned down on their 'doctrinal referrences' they stop answering/commenting.

I'd give you the links but they have disabled their comments page on their Evangelical Catholicism blog.

Not to mention what you call 'brash' behavior has alienated even the most saintly of my friends from engaging them in conversation (blogging) because of their incessive ad hominem attacks.

Kat at least stops her 'claims', but Michael doesn't. Which like most liberals devolves into ad hominem attacks and multiple straw man arguments.

As far as alleged conservatives are concerned, I'll take your word for it. But when they showcase Karl Marx on their blog header, I stop reading them immediately (on Vox Nova).

I can only speak from my own experience, and both Michael and Katerina have been nothing but respectful and congenial toward me, all the while acknowledging those areas where we have political differences of opinion.

They can be quite nice for most of the time. I still have congenial relations with them, though after much prayer and effort on my part.

Keep up the great blogging Jay!

Two words: Liberation theology.

Stumbled upon this thread late...

Tito, I never mind criticisms of the way I live out my spirituality. I will be the first to admit that I can be painfully prideful in theological discussions, and I am working on that as much as I can. But just to be fair here, you said that you've met Katerina and me. We have never met in person, though I did see you from a distance at the St. Josemaria Escriva Mass at the co-cathedral.

I do take one exception to what you wrote about me. I really do not think I am "heterodox" on any of my doctrinal or moral views. I think that is a serious accusation to level at anyone, one that ought to be backed up by something.

Jay, thank you for your kind words. I love our fleeting encounters in political perspective.

Regarding "liberation theology," I must confess that I have read only one book in this area--Sobrino's Christ at the Crossroads. I have never taken to liberation theology, and I do not think I ever will.

Lastly, Katerina and I are only two of the roughly 10 regular contributors to Vox Nova. Please don't judge the blog strictly by our views. Ah, and do not forget that Kat and I are two people with two minds.
