Fr. Pavone, Senator Brownback and Rudy Giuliani
Christopher Blosser of Against the Grain and Catholics in the Public Square has a post entitled "Fr. Pavone, Senator Brownback and Rudy Giuliani" in which he discusses recent comments by Sen. Sam Brownback and Fr. Frank Pavone indicating that they would deem it acceptable to support Rudy Giuliani should he win the GOP nomination. (Christopher has also posted his commentary at Catholics in the Public Square.) It's a very well-thought-out post, and I encourage you to read it and the numerous links he includes.
Now, all things being equal, I would view Giuliani as preferable to, say, Hillary! Clinton when voting for President. But all things are NOT equal. Right now, we have one party in which pro-lifers have a voice and one in which they most assuredly do not. If pro-lifers are to be a force on the political scene in the future, I deem it imperative that Rudy Giuliani NOT get the GOP nomination, and that if he does get it, that he be defeated at the polls on Election Day in November 2008.
Yes, even if that means electing Hillary!.
Don't get me wrong: I would never advocate the evil of actually voting for that person; but voting for an acceptable pro-life 3rd party, which would inevitably lead to a Democrat victory, is in my view preferable to electing Giuliani and thereby ending any meaningful pro-life presence in the GOP.
See Regular Guy Paul (here, here, here, and here) for an explanation. Paul has persuasively argued on numerous occasions that if the GOP can win with a pro-abort candidate (especially if pro-lifers will support said candidate despite being pro-abortion), the GOP will never bother to nominate another pro-lifer again. Which is why I agree when Paul says: "... send the message that the GOP will win as a pro-life party, or not at all."
