Congratulations, Fr. Schild!

"Toledo Diocese Ordains its Newest Priest":
TOLEDO -- The Diocese of Toledo now has another priest. Reverend Eric Schild was ordained in an elaborate ceremony and mass on Saturday. He was the only priest to be ordained in Toledo this year, but a spokesman for the diocese says that is more of a reflection on society than it is on the church.

It was a day of celebration at Rosary Cathedral. Deacon Eric Schild took his vows and was ordained Reverend Eric Schild. Bishop Leonard Blair celebrated the mass to give his blessing. It's a moment the newest priest in the diocese says he'll never forget. "It's an amazing feeling when you're lying on the floor and you can feel God's presence there," said Schild. "People singing and praying, and it's an amazing, amazing feeling."

Even though he's the only member of the Class of 2007, he wasn't feeling lonely on this special day. "When I looked around and I saw all the priests there present, and there were so many priests and so many deacons, fellow clergy, it's hard to feel alone in a packed cathedral," said Schild.

Considering it's long been difficult for the catholic church to attract men and women to the religious vocations, one is better than none to the Diocese of Toledo. "Every year when we ordain a priest or a number of priests, it's a great day of celebration, it's a sign of hope for our church," said Rev. Mike Billian, the episcopal vicar for the Diocese.

He says the priest shortage is also a sign of the times in society. "I think the priesthood is in the same shape that married life is," said Billian. "It's tough for people to make a commitment that is lifelong."

The diocese is planning to ordain 2 priests next year, and 4 in 2009.
