I Had a Feeling This Was Going to Happen

See UPDATE #3 in my post re: Catholic Masculinity & Virility in St. Blog’s. Ouch.

Perhaps I should take this opportunity to state, for the record, that I took Eric's column in the Register to be somewhat tongue-in-cheek. Perhaps I'm mistaken, but that's how I took it. Eric seems to prefer "Tarzanish" manliness to the introspective variety. And while my fairly tame style of blogging isn't exactly the sort that would have the King of the Jungle swinging through the trees, I do try to have a good time and not take myself too seriously.

That being said, I DO take seriously my role as a Catholic husband and father, and I try to blog accordingly (hence, the "Pro Familia" portion of this blog's title). Sometimes I may cross the line with some of my rhetoric. Maybe I've used dicey language a time or two. And then there was the infamous incident last March with a certain supermodel. But all-in-all, I try to keep it clean and family-friendly.

In the end, I recognize that there are countless blogs by men out there who are, by reason of their Catholic masculine virtue, imminently eminently more worthy than yours truly to have been mentioned in Eric's column. But I sure won't sneeze at the publicity.

Manly Men

UPDATE #2
I have to address one thing that Dom said in his post "Not manly enough?". At his blog, I responded to his comment about "posting photos of nearly naked models who profess to be Catholic" by noting that the post to which he was referring is hardly representative of what this blog is about.

Dom responded: "Jay: I want to be clear that I don’t think that the post was necessarily inappropriate, but that the question of manliness and virility and masculine virtue should not hinge on such things. In other words, posting such things doesn’t make you manly, even if it’s not particularly wrong."

Dom misses the point. It's immaterial whether some post of mine from a year ago was inappropriate or not. And who said "the question of manliness and virility and masculine virtue hinged" on such a post?

The implication seems to be that the Adriana Lima post alone is what merited this blog's mention in Eric's column, and is sort of dismissive of any other reasons for which Eric might have mentioned this blog. This is a blog called Pro Ecclesia * Pro Familia * Pro Civitate, which discusses the intersection of faith, family and politics from the perspective of a husband and a father. It's not outside the realm of possibilities that perhaps this fact is what Eric thought merited some mention.

After all, this blog is hardly some sort of St. Blog's version of Gentlemen's Quarterly.

NB: And by the way, today is my 2nd bloggiversary. Here's my first substantive post from 2 years ago. Fairly auspicious start, if I do say so myself. And as you can tell by the quality of my writing and commentary since then, it's all pretty much gone downhill from there.

I read that particular posting (on another blog) as well. Is it just me, or did anyone else get the distinct impression that some of the comments there were akin to the nerdy kids who were always chosen last, or in this case, never chosen at all... but this time, some of them have chosen the blogosphere to whine that they weren't chosen and/or to throw stones.

Eric wrote a funny article. How sad some have to b***h and moan because they weren't chosen. Sheesh. Time to lighten up, guys.

I particularly like your use of malapropism. Did you know it would be the word of the day today?

I imagine you meant there were countless blogs that were notably or eminently more worthy and not that their worthiness was soon to be achieved or imminent.

Also, I agree that that one post didn't contribute to the manliness of the blog, but it's senseless to quibble about one stray post.

I kind of agree with the original hypothesis. There are a LOT of good Catholic mom blogs (my favorite is SFO Mom) - not so many of us Dad's. We also kind of stink at building community online (which is why I think the mom's stand out - they are really good at it).

Perhaps we men are more interested in taking someone on. Just a thouhgt.

You may have something there, Rob.
