Comedy Central Won't Offend Scientologists, But Has No Problem with Blasphemy
On the network that pulled an episode of South Park so as not to offend Scientologists, one controversial comedian may have crossed the line Wednesday by having sex with God on her TV show:
Sarah Silverman had a one-night stand with God in the season finale of "The Sarah Silverman Program," which aired on Comedy Central Wednesday night. My Comments:
In the episode, God chooses to speak to Silverman because of a selfless song she sings. She's surprised to learn the man she's speaking to is God. She asks him "Are you God’s black friend?" and then decides to call him "Black God."
The pair end up going back to Silverman's place for a night of passion that includes God asking her "Who made you, monkey? Who created you?" during the height of their passion.
The next morning, after she rebuffs God's attempt to take the relationship further, she kicks him in the groin.

Nice. Especially the mockery of traditional Catholic catechesis with that "Who made you?" bit. I sorta liked this show, but won't be watching now.

Silverman has a 'concert'/performance on HBO that makes some reference to Jesus in its title. The handful of times I've stumbled upon her, I've found her a bore. I believe she's married to Jimmy Kimmel, a genuinely funny man.
Her and Kimmel won't mary I have heard, she insists on not marying untill "everyone" i.e. gays can. I have heard, belive it or not, that Kimmel was raised in a strict Catholic family, though I would imagine he doesn't have much use for the doctrines and morals of the Church, but I could be wrong.
This show made me laugh a few times, but mostly it was too "out there" Comedy central is just trying to desperatly fill the hole between South Park and the Daily Show created by the departure of Dave Chapelle from the network. May I suggest, more Colbert? haha
Anyway a lot of Silverman's humor invovles Christianity, she seems to be one of those non-Christians who still has the faith on her mind ALL THE TIME.
To be honest the sketch with "God" I found to be in poor taste, but nothing to get riled up over, I guess its a sad reflection that this stuff is pretty much par-for-the course on cable tv these days.
Actually, Comedy Central has picked on Scientology on several occasions.
Also, it's a misconception to pit Scientology against Catholicism. I know that much has been made of the Katie Holmes thing, but the truth is that she was agnostic and non-practicing for years before Scientology piqued her interest.
Scientology is actually big on interfaith efforts. I really believe, personally, that religious people of all cloths should band together against the amoral "you're just a chemical accident" crowd, against the "just take a pill" and "don't be accountable" folks, and against the "anything spiritual is bad" media push.
(I respect the beliefs of my many Catholic friends, and I'm happy that they respect mine.)
Sincerely,
Greg
Scientologist and proud of it
