Quote of the Day - Tony Dungy

I'll tell you what. I'm proud to be representing African-American coaches, to be the first African-American to win this. It means an awful lot to our country. But again, more than anything, I've said it before, Lovie Smith and I, not only the first two African-Americans, but Christian coaches showing that you can win doing it the Lord's way. And we're more proud of that.
~ Tony Dungy, after coaching his team to a Super Bowl victory, and in response to a question from CBS Sports' Jim Nantz about the "social significance" of the victory

My Comments:
The NFL are rightfully proud to have men like Tony Dungy and Lovie Smith coaching in their league. Not because of the color of their skin, but because of the content of their character.

And if I get my wish, Jerry Jones hires my fellow Baylor alum, Mike Singletary - a devout Christian and an outstanding individual, to coach the Dallas Cowboys. Again, not for the color of his skin, but for the content of his character.

I thought the post game speeches giving thanks to God were quite fascinating and very good to see.

For what it's worth former Packers head-coach Mike Sherman was a devout Catholic and a daily Mass go'er.

The Packers have long had a very Catholic streak, many of the legendary coaches, including Lombardi were devout Catholics. The current coach, Mike McCarthy is practicing Catholic too but I don't know much else about him.

I have also heard good things about the Catholicism of Brett Favre (after overcomming some problems in his life.)

The only Dallas Cowboy that matters (i.e. my own personal hero while I was growing up) is a devout Catholic. Roger Staubach.
