McCain: Roe V. Wade Should Be Overturned

The most sensible thing I've heard out of John McCain in years:
SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) - Republican presidential candidate John McCain, looking to improve his standing with the party's conservative voters, said Sunday the court decision that legalized abortion should be overturned.

"I do not support Roe versus Wade. It should be overturned," the Arizona senator told about 800 people in South Carolina, one of the early voting states.

McCain also vowed that if elected, he would appoint judges who "strictly interpret the Constitution of the United States and do not legislate from the bench."

***
McCain's campaign also announced early Sunday that he had been endorsed by former Oklahoma Gov. Frank Keating, who had been considering his own bid for the White House, and former Texas Sen. Phil Gramm, who failed in his bid for the Republican nomination in 1996.

Keating told the crowd that McCain is the "only candidate who is a true-blue, Ronald Reagan conservative."

My Comments:
Not that McCain's promises in this regard should be taken at face value, but something tells me the MSM love affair with the guy is now officially over.

The Frank Keating endorsement is pretty big news, though (especially considering that Sam Brownback is from a neighboring state). Gov. Keating is Catholic.

McCain has more credibility here than Romney and certainly more than Giuliani, but that's saying almost nothing.

I'm in no sense a McCain fan, but if he were the Republican nominee I think I'd probably be willing to vote for him, whereas if Giuliani was the nominee, I'd have to sit out or vote third party.

Nor can I think I'm the only conservative republican who feels that way.

My suspicion is that McCain would turn out more conservative than his reputation, and Giuliani would turn out even more liberal than his reputation.

That pretty much my position as well.

McCain has a long way to go to "heal the wounds" of the past several years before I'd be willing to vote for him. After what he's pulled since 2000, I just don't trust him.

If I HAD to choose between McCain and Giuliani, or McCain and Hillary!/Obama, then I'd go for McCain. But I don't HAVE to make that choice.

Ok - lets overturn it - today! Please - then what happens? Hmmm - we go back to the way it was before - Abortion on demand avaiable in the states. Is California going to outlaw it? New York?

This debate is foolish and failed.

Why don't you so called pro lifers do support policies that get a the root causes of why women have abortion?

Two kinds of people take the all or nothing tack: uber-idealists who will never accomplish anything other than doing more harm than good and agents for the other side attempting to cynically con pro-lifers into voting for pro-aborts. Guess which one Eamon is.

Eamon, without Roe, fewer abortions happen.

Without Roe, Congress and/or the states can take action.

Your point would be like telling Eisenhower, "OK, take Normandy! Then what? The Nazis still have the rest of Europe."

"Why don't you so-called patriots support policies that get at the root of Nazi evil and expansion?"

All law legislates someone's morality.

And a party (or a nation) that doesn't understand -- and won't stand up for -- the value of a human life can't be trusted with the complex issues of caring for the environment, managing the climate, recognizing enemies, fighting enemies, providing healthcare or welfare benefits, any of hundreds of other functions.

First things first.

You're Catholic, why aren't you on our side on this?
