Who's the Villain in this Story?
(Hat tip: Amy Welborn)
Deacon uses homily to criticize the pro-ESCR vote of a politico in attendance:
A deacon upbraided Rep. Brian Higgins during Sunday morning Mass in St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church for voting in favor of embryonic stem cell research, prompting the congressman and his family to walk out during the sermon. My Comments:
The Rev. Art Smith, pastor of the South Buffalo church, said he felt "horrible" about the Higgins family's departure on "Respect Life Sunday" and offered an apology from the pulpit after the congressman had left.
Bishop Edward U. Kmiec of the Catholic Diocese of Buffalo later issued a statement also criticizing Deacon Tom McDonnell's action.
"I can't tell you how terrible I felt," Smith said Tuesday. "While we have to always uphold the church's teachings regarding life, I don't think it's ever fair to publicly criticize someone who serves our community and our parish so well."

Question: Okay, so who is the villain in this story? The deacon who, while speaking Truth, probably violated decorum and inappropriately used his homily to single out a politician in attendance? Or is it the politician who voted to kill embryonic human lives and harvest their "spare parts" (and who has a 100% NARAL rating, having voted the anti-life position in all 9 "life-related" votes during the last Congress)?
Answer: The pastor and the bishop who would rather curry favor with politicians like "Brian" and "Nancy" than challenge them on their anti-life votes that so clearly violate Church teaching.

Why isn't this deacon the new Archbishop of D.C.?
Fr Smith went on to wail about 'the pain and hurt' of the event.
Sorta like D&C pain? Like that, Father?
Henry VIII attented an Easter Mass, the Priest at the Mass used the sermon the attack the king's divorce and treatment of his true wife Catherine, I think Henry had him killed. John the Baptist killed defending morals, speaking truth to power as well. I admire the deacons actions but I hesistate to call him a hero, this sort of action SHOULD be common place in the Catholic Church. Maybe if so many Pro-Choice Catholics knew they would have to face a stern moral reprimending at Mass they would change their ways, or atleast stop going to Mass and reciving communion in a state of mortal sin and causing scandal.
I'm in agreement with you here. But it seems that it's only OK for Catholics to criticize the bishops when they're wrong about something in light of this thread and a previous thread I was on with you on illegal immigration and the guest worker program. I'm just sayin...
But on this topic, I wrote to my Archbishop a couple of years ago regarding our two pro-abortion senators from Washington State (Murray and Cantwell) who are both Catholic and asked him to offer a public statement and call on them to either renounce their pro-abortion stance or they would not be permitted to receive Holy Communion. He responded by saying he had no evidence that they were "practicing Catholics" and that he strives to enter "dialogue" with politicians, not give public statements condemning them.
