Brownback Announcement Coverage

Stay tuned - I'll continue to update all day as the news unfolds.

From USAToday:
Brownback seeks to be Republican conservatives' choice in '08 race
TOPEKA, Kansas (AP) — Senator Sam Brownback plans to formally announce his White House bid Saturday, and he figures he has an edge with Republican voters that other presidential rivals do not — unquestioned conservative credentials...
From The Kansas City Star:
Brownback to declare presidential candidacy
Sen. Sam Brownback of Kansas today will become the first major Republican to officially declare his presidential candidacy.

Brownback, 50, will speak to reporters and 300 invited guests at noon in the Kansas Expocentre in Topeka, according to his staff.

“That’s his hometown; that’s where he started his career as the state secretary of agriculture,” said Brownback spokesman Brian Hart...
From The Hutchinson News:
Kansas' contender - Sam Brownback will announce today his campaign to be America's 44th president
At noon today in Topeka, Sen. Sam Brownback, R-Kan., will announce his pursuit of a dream.

The goal is to stand on the steps of the Capitol at noon Jan. 20, 2009, promising to "preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States" as the 44th President...
From Lawrence Journal World:
Is Brownback really shooting for veep role?
Allan Cigler, a KU political science professor, says Sen. Sam Brownback’s bid for the White House — to be announced Saturday — may be more about setting himself up to be a pick for vice president, the New York Times reports today...
From the Democrat National Committee:
DNC: Brownback Announces Candidacy of Ideology Over People
Tomorrow, Kansas Senator Sam Brownback will announce his candidacy for the GOP Presidential nomination giving the American people their first real glimpse into his rigid conservative ideology. Despite his rhetoric on "real compassion", Senator Brownback has seemingly put ideology first, voting against the needs of hard working Americans, protection for our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, benefits for our veterans and against advancing medical research during his years in the Senate.

"By throwing his hat in the ring Senator Brownback will have to reconcile his compassionate rhetoric with the callous conservatism his record shows," said Democratic National Committee spokesperson Amaya Smith. "So far, Senator Brownback's record has already shown that he's willing to place his uncompromising ideology over the needs of real people. The American people want a President who will work for the interest of all Americans, not another stubborn ideologue who places his own political agenda over the needs of the American people." ...
From something calling itself Wonkette:
Brownback Nation!
Sam Brownback is still running for President! The Senator from somewhere white will announce tomorrow, two days before the anniversary of Roe v Wade, the one thing he hates more than homosexuals...
And my favorite headline of the day (so far) from a site called 365gay.com:

From CBS News:
Sen. Brownback Joins Presidential Field
(AP) Sen. Sam Brownback, R-Kan., began a long-shot bid for president on Saturday, hoping his reputation as a favorite son of the religious right can help him outdistance better known rivals.

"My family and I are taking the first steps on the yellow brick road to the White House," Brownback said, returning to his home state to declare his intention to seek his party's nomination in 2008.

The two-term senator said he will fight to renew the nation's cultural values and pledged to focus on rebuilding families...
From the Christian Broadcasting Network:
Sen. Brownback Enters Presidential Bid
CBNNews.com -- TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) -- Kansas Sen. Sam Brownback jumped into the 2008 presidential race Saturday, a favorite of the religious right now in an uphill battle against better known rivals for the GOP nomination.

"I am a conservative and I'm proud of being a conservative," he proclaimed.

"My family and I are taking the first steps on the yellow brick road to the White House. It's a great journey," the two-term senator told hundreds of supporters. He pledged to fight on behalf of the nation's cultural values and to focus on rebuilding families.

The 50-year-old Brownback offers himself as a "full-scale Ronald Reagan conservative."

After Saturday's speech, he told reporters: "My positions are at the heart of where the Republican Party is. I'm willing to take those positions with all comers." ...
From The Wichita Eagle via Kansas.com:
Kansas Sen. Pat Roberts endorses Brownback's presidential bid
TOPEKA, Kan. - Sam Brownback doesn't have to worry any more about whether his presidential candidacy will be endorsed by Pat Roberts, his fellow Kansas Republican in the Senate.

Roberts attended the rally Saturday in Topeka at which Brownback kicked off a long-shot bid for the Republican nomination.

He also issued a statement: "Kansans have a long history of supporting their native sons as national leaders - and I am honored to stand with Sam today. He has my support and best wishes as he undertakes this historic journey in his life as a public servant."

In December, Roberts' sympathies were in doubt after he spoke to a group of lobbyists and corporate officials in Washington. The leader of Arizona Sen. John McCain's presidential exploratory committee said Roberts endorsed McCain.

Roberts said then that it was too early for him to endorse anyone.

In his statement Saturday, Roberts called Brownback "a true patriot who loves God and his country like many distinguished natives sons before him...
From Bloomberg:
Republican Senator Brownback to Run for President
Jan. 20 (Bloomberg) -- U.S. Senator Sam Brownback, a Kansas Republican and one of the closest congressional allies of social conservative activists, said today that he will run for president in 2008.

"Ours is a great nation and I make one pledge to you, to use our greatness for goodness," Brownback, 50, one of six Republicans who so far have either announced a bid or formed an exploratory committee, said in a prepared statement distributed to reporters by e-mail.

With that goal in mind, Brownback, who made his announcement in Topeka, Kansas, said that he supports "the institution of marriage as a union of a man and a woman for life." He also called for finding a cure for cancer, U.S. self- reliance in energy, winning the war in Iraq and a flat tax as an alternative to the current income tax system.

A member of the Senate Appropriations and Judiciary panels, Brownback is best known for the central role he takes in debates on social policy. He is one of the Senate's most outspoken critics of abortion and embryonic stem cell research...

Great Blog! I am a 2L at Ave Maria Law and I was very pleased to discover your website (plus I completely share your devotion to St. Thomas More). Brownback is excellent! The reality is, he has a strong shot at the nomination since many conservative don't like McCain and all the other Republicans are socially liberal (Romney is touting himself as a social Conservative, but he has been pro-choice in the past, I don't know where he stands now, but I know with confidence where Brownback stands!) Even if Brownback doesn't get the nomination, he still is an ideal candidate for Veep, since he can appeal to conservatives if there's a more moderate head to the ticket. What he'll have to day, and what I sincerely hope he does, he take charge of the discussion on social issues. I am so tired of soundbites, catchphrases, and abortion getting like 30 seconds inthe presidential debates! The pro-life side won't start winning until we take charge of the discussion in a rational, well-reasoned manner! We have the winning arguments, the probelmn is, in the national forum, you never hear the arguments!!! I think Brownback might be just the "anti-choice extremist" to start the conversation! What do you think??

Gay Foe Brownback Runs

What an endorsement!

But if, as one of those papers suggested, this is really an effort to run for the Vice Presidency, I must say that I still wouldn't vote for McCain or Giuliani even with Brownback on the ticket in the second spot.

Why is that people who are pro birth claim the "pro life" mantra? How can this be "Catholic". Why are these people not out marching against the war and the death penalty as well? How can a Catholic pick and choose life?

Is abortion wrong? Sure it is. The 1973 decision was not an "abortion was right o wrong" decision. It was handed down on a constitutional rights issue. Will it be overturned? Doubtful. Will overturning it eliminate Abortion in this country? NO

It would seem many on the so called "religious right" insist on turning the tradgedy of abortion into a politically driven culture war, while ignoring so many other life issues. While doing so efforts to combat abortion that actually work are being overlooked. House bills recently introduced by Rep. Ryan and Rep. Davis address the root causes of abortion.

Real pro life Catholics should refuse to stand by and watch the unborn die while we wait for unlikely event that Roe V Wade will be overturned. Chief Justice Roberts has said that Roe V Wade is settled law.

There are things we can do to help the unborn right now - like expand health care coverage, education, adoption programs, ease the economic burdens on working families, and address endemic problems of greed, violence, sex, corruption, and materialism in our society. Thankfully, the new Congress is taking up many of these measures.

This is a real Catholic Pro Life agenda. Get in line with Madam Speaker. Mr. Speaker and the President have done nothing to stop or reduce Abortion in the last six years. That is a fact.

They've introduced bills to ban contraceptives? That's awesome.

Billy - do some research. Inform yourself. You would be suprised by what you learn.

Billy, there is such a thing in Catholic teaching as a just war. There is no such thing as a "just abortion".

The cause of abortion is not a lack of contraceptives, nor is it proverty. This is clearly demonstrated by the prevalence of abortion among rich contracepting couples.

In fact, artificial contraception is also not acceptable under Catholic teaching. The contraceptive lifestyle is likewise not a pro-life lifestyle.

Now, perhaps you would would be content to see the Supreme Court find that the right to the "Pursuit of Happiness" included a right to rob banks, and would turn your attention to addresses the "root causes of bank robbery".

Perhaps you would be content to see the repeal of the 15th amendment and the return of slavery, and would turn your attention to addressing the "root causes of slavery".

But in fact somethings must not be tolerated, even sometimes, and abortion tops my list of those. Roe may be "settled law", but that must surely be a new and different meaning of the word "settled" with which I was not previously familiar. It has been contested for 33 years now with increasingly large demonstrations, it has been redefined again and again as different jurisdictions have attempted to skirt the issue (one such is before the court right now) and it remains the most controversial ruling handed down by the Court since Dred Scott. Plessy v. Fergusson was settled law when it was overturned by Brown v. Board of Education.

If you look up the phrase "wishful thinking" in a dictionary, you'll find a picture of Justice Roberts saying "Roe v. Wade is settled law."

Brownback will be out of the running once Tancredo and Hunter shine the spotlight on his pro-amnesty voting record.

Once they realize he's pro-amnesty, Conservatives will drop him like a bag of dirt.
