A Little Bright Spot

A thoughtful reader was kind enough to send along the following tidbits of hope for the future:

Kids select Blackwell for governor, DeWine for senate:
Kids Voting USA participants selected a different route for the state of Ohio when they didn’t agree with their parents on several election races.

Participants from Hopewell-Loudon Local Schools, New Riegel Local Schools and Tiffin city and parochial schools selected Republicans Kenneth Blackwell as Ohio’s governor and Mike DeWine as their U.S. Senator.

Their totals were: Blackwell, 1,180, and Democrat Ted Strickland, 976. For the Senate race, the totals were DeWine, 1,031, and Democrat Sherrod Brown, 994.

In the actual statewide election, Brown and Strickland won their respective races.

Bonnie Boroff — the local Kids Voting USA director and long-time member of the League of Women Voters, the group that coordinates the activity — said this year’s Kids Voting USA results differed from previous years because they usually reflect the actual county or state results.

“This was different. … I thought that was kind of interesting,” she said. “Why that was different this year, I don’t know.”

Also, Fr. Frank Pavone's view on the elections:
Pendulums swing, and political experts point out that the results of yesterday’s elections are not unusual for the sixth year of a two-term President. I will leave to them the detailed political commentary about the dynamics of this election. Let me share with you, however, some key points for us to keep in mind as a pro-life movement, and as we continue with renewed zeal to press forward with our goals.

1. The Democrats gained power by latching onto our momentum, not theirs...
2. Unless pro-life wins, nobody wins...
3. Culturally, we continue to have the momentum...
4. The vote on the South Dakota ban does not mean what abortion supporters want it to mean...
5. Keep politics in perspective...
6. Start working now for 2008...

... Remember, we are not just working for victory; we are working from victory. Victory is our starting point, because Christ is Risen. The outcome of the battle for life has already been decided. It only remains for us to be sure to do our part to proclaim, celebrate, and serve that victory, and bring its transforming power to every segment of our society!

  1. I think there are a number of bright spots amidst the gloom.

Now we start to fight; the Democrats will push bad stuff, and forces in Congress, along with those among the people, will swing into action to stop them. No, we may not stop everything, but watch, they won't get near as much as the dire predictions now forecast. It's easy to issue scary predictions; it's hard to pass significant policy.

Now, the issues will be better clarified, and we will see conservative leadership emerge. Watch Coburn, or Brownback, or others. There is an opportunity to shine, now, and to do a lot of good. One Senator can do a lot to gum up the works, particularly in a Senate 51-49 (and that 51 includes some folks very susceptible to public pressure). Yes, they control the noise- and mischief-making functions of Congress: the chairmanships, the committees, the floor (in the House); they can create a lot of misery for the White House with hearings and subpoenae; but passing laws is a lot harder.

Even big spending is a hollow threat; they were already getting most everything they wanted previously. Votes against defense spending in wartime? Make our day! We'll do our Christmas shopping for '08 early!

Meanwhile, a lot of problem folks from the GOP are gone, and they aren't coming back. Some time in the wilderness might do a lot of good.

Meanwhile, aren't we glad we didn't tamper with the filibuster? We're gonna need it now.
