A Pope That Evangelicals Can Love

Pope Speaks on Personal Relation With Christ(emphasis addded)
Vatican, Oct. 04 (CWNews.com) - Pope Benedict XVI stressed the personal relationship that Christians have with Jesus Christ, in his regular public audience on October 4.

Regarding St. Nathaniel, the Pope recalled the skeptical response he gave to St. Philip, when the latter sought to introduce him to Christ: "Can anything good come out of Nazareth?" That response is important, the Pope observed, because it underlines the obscurity in which Jesus had lived, and thus "emphasizes God's freedom, which surprises our expectations by being found where least expected."
When he does meet Jesus, and questions Him, Nathaniel receives a simple answer, the Pope noted: "Come and see!" The Pontiff reflected that "in our relationship with Jesus, words are not enough." To grow deeper in faith, "it is up to us to become personally involved in an intimate and deep relationship with Jesus."

You are right, Jay. Like you, I have more than a hint of evangelical in my background, and it is good to see the Holy Father putting this emphasis on our personal relationship with Our Lord.
