Francisco Franco: 70th Year Anniversary

From FreeRepublic.com:

Today in history, on 1 October 1936, the leader of the Nationalist forces of Spain, Gen. Francisco Franco, was proclaimed Generalissimo of the National Army and Head of State. Although it is not currently fashionable to say so, Franco was a hero in the global struggle against communism. As always, history (and God) will be the only just Judge.

I am not ready to call him a hero, but there's no question he played an insufficiently appreciated key role in defeating a communist takeover of Spain. I also believe much that is said against him is overstated. Yes, he received help from the fascist powers; however, he did not join the Axis during the war.

None of that aims to suggest there's no criticizing him -- which is why I am not calling him a hero.

But it is interesting, if one is going to fault him on human rights and harshness, compare him with Castro -- surely Castro has been more ruthless, more cruel -- and, Castro has been far less effective in fostering both economic development, social stability, and political and religious freedoms . . .

And yet -- who is lionized, and who is treated as an embarrassment, by the "smart people"?

Hmmm.

¡Viva España! ¡Viva Franco! Franco was indeed a hero. He saved Spain from the continuing ravages of red revolution and stood against the tide of both red and black/brown socialism for almost 40 years. I expect that when the world regains its sanity, he will be raised to the honours of the Altar.

Someone who saved the Church in Spain from the utter destruction it faced from a Leftist victory in the Civil War?

That's a hero in my book. By the way, God bless JPII for canonizing many of the priest/bishop/religious/lay martyrs of that era.

By the way, one can see from the very quick moral collapse of post-Franco Spain that he did in fact hold the line for Catholic values in Spain.

Indeed, it is sad to see that in the end the Left won the war in Spain after all.

The Gay marriages and other things would never have occured on Franco's watch!
