About Me
- Name: Pro Ecclesia
- Location: Ohio, United States
A convert to the Catholic Church who became Catholic because of a belief in and devotion to the Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist. * A graduate of Baylor University and the University of Virginia School of Law. * Former Mayor of the Town of Columbia, Virginia. * Married with four children: two boys and two girls. * Primary interests include the Catholic Church, family, Early American History, and law/politics * Primary purpose of this blog is fostering enlightened discussion about the roles played by the institutions of religion, family, and state in our daily lives. * Under the protection of St. Thomas More, martyr, and patron of lawyers, judges, civil servants, politicians, statesmen, and large families (not to mention troubled marriages).
Thomas More, counselor of law and patron of statesmen, merry martyr and most human of saints:
Pray that, for the glory of God and in the pursuit of His justice, I may be able in argument, accurate in analysis, keen in study, correct in conclusion, loyal to clients, honest with all, courteous to adversaries, trustworthy with confidences, courageous in court. Sit with me at my desk and listen with me to my clients' tales. Read with me in my library and stand always beside me so that today I shall not, to win a point, lose my soul.
Pray that my family may find in me what yours found in you: friendship and courage, cheerfulness and charity, diligence in duties, counsel in adversity, patience in pain -- their good servant, and God's first. AMEN.

Prayer to St. Thomas More for Lawyers and Judges
Dear Scholar and Martyr, it was not the King of England but you who were the true Defender of the Faith. Like Christ unjustly condemned, neither promises nor threats could make you accept a civil ruler as head of the Christian Church.
Perfect in your honesty and love of truth, grant that lawyers and judges may imitate you and achieve true justice for all people. AMEN.

Pretty funny! I can't see how he squares his faith with being in that movie. *sigh*
Of course, none of us are perfect, and I'm pretty sure that everyone does things that don't square with the Faith, either. I know *I* sure fit that category. Biggest difference is that I'm not spotlighted while doing it.
I guess we should mostly just mind our own beeswax and stop trying to find orthodox Catholics in public life. Just look at our parishes for them instead.
How dare you mock my fiance!!!!!!!!
Jay!
Regarding religion Colbert is not fooling orthodox Catholics, the only people being fooled are the liberal secular college students who like his show. Colbert is able to slip in his Catholicism behind the smokescreen of his conservative-act.
When he had the head of the Catholic Leauge on his show, Stephen ripped on Protesants who say the Catholic Church is evil, if he were staying true to his act and character he would not be getting into that.
Apparently, he's got you fooled, too, FD.
;)
How dare you mock my fiance!!!!!!!!
Considering that your fiance is already married, maybe "utah cannonball" would be a more appropriate handle. ;-p
Why Publius,
Didn't you know that Carolina Cannonball "is already married" as well?
;)
I hate myself for bringing that up again.
;)
Hmm. While, as everyone knows, polygyny is universally practiced in Utah, polyandry isn't well-received. How about "Berkeley Cannonball"?
you two are so cheeky. :)
I think it helps to take people as they are, not as you expect or suppose they are.
I.e., did Mr. Colbert ever say he was "one of us?" What does that mean, precisely?
He says, or offers evidence of being, a serious, practicing Catholic. That doesn't mean he is exactly my kind, or your kind, of Catholic; or that he has our political views, etc.
I think some expect him to be "our guy" in entertainment, a kind of "secret agent." First, who knows that's true? Second, even if he is, all these expectations from "us" won't help him as "our secret agent," now will it?
Instead, he's a Catholic entertainer who frequently says and does things we like. That's a lot. Be happy.
I agree with Fr. Fox. Colbert is not fooling me with his act, but he has said very Catholic things on his show. Whether this is part of his "act" or not, doesn't really matter, because the truth comes through. It's kind of hard to mock Matthew 16:18, John 3:16, and the Nicene Creed (all things he has cited on his show). And when was the last time you heard anyone on TV say that Jesus Christ founded the Catholic Church?
Also, I don't think Colbert's Catholicism is really part of the "act." He treats it in a similar way as he treats his love of "Dungeons and Dragons" and "Lord of the Rings" (2 things that I'm sure he really does love).
I'm keeping my eye on him, but you've got to admit, he's genuinely funny.
"I think it helps to take people as they are, not as you expect or suppose they are.

Father,
I have nothing against the guy. I really don't know anything about him because I don't watch his show (political humor doesn't really do it for me).
This post is just my way of poking fun at St. Blog's collective love affair with a TV personality. Please don't take it any other way, and certainly don't take it as my judgment on Mr. Colbert's Catholic bona fides.
Boethius, perfect point, "And when was the last time you heard anyone on TV say that Jesus Christ founded the Catholic Church?"
Most of Colbert's religious satire is aimed at Fundemtalist Protestants and even then he is very soft on them compared to most commedians. Colbert has had some jokes involving the Catholic Church but they have never been mean spirited, and some of the things he has said about the Church are actually quite beautiful. Also he recntly did a great job laying out the case AGAINST stem cell research.
What do you Colbert doubters expect? Does he have to sign some pledge of faith on the air? He pushes his Catholicism as far as he can considering he...
1-Works for the people who own MTV, some of the biggest promoters of a immoral (ammoral?) society.
2-Look what just happend to Mel Gibson, the media is happy to bring down any devoutly religious person the second they slip up.
3-He has to appeal to an audiance, the vast majority of Colbert's fans are not Catholic.
I am just thankful they are getting a little bit of religion, maybe Colbert's recitation of the Creed or his statments about the Church being founded by Jesus will stick in the back of a few minds, like planted seeds.
Also consider, how many of you made sure everyone you knew at work knew you were a commited Catholic? In 2 years of being a janitor I never said a word to anyone about religion if people we're "taking me as I were," they'd have no clue about a very important part of my life, simply because I did not feel the need to talk about my religion at work.
Colbert does work it in somtimes, true orthdox Catholicism per say may only be 1% of his show but that still makes it one of the most faithful things on TV this side of EWTN!
Keep in mind that many "Catholic" or "ex-Catholic" Commedians get A LOT of cheap laughs at the expense of the Church. Because guys like George Carlin and Dennis Leary were "raised Catholic" they have just enough inside info to really hit us where it hurts. If a guy as funny and smart as Colbert with that kind of "inside info" on growing up Catholic wanted to get some more fame he could really unleash some vicious jokes against the Church, but he has not! In fact, some of Colbert's harshest words on air and out of character were AGAINST former Catholics.
Stephen is a practicing Catholic and is raising his kid's that way, as near as I can tell he is a good man, and in the end it is the salvation of the soul that matters, and I have seen nothing from him that would put his salvation in serious jeopardy.
Yes I would LOVE to see Colbert as a guest on The World Over or speaking at a Pro-Life Rally, or hear him say in an interview that his family prays the Rosary together every night but as Fr. Fox said, "Instead, he's a Catholic entertainer who frequently says and does things we like. That's a lot. Be happy."
I am very happy!
Maybe I do kind of think of him as our Secret Agent, it is nice to know that even in the secular world of entertainment "one of us" is succeding, big time!
"What do you Colbert doubters expect? Does he have to sign some pledge of faith on the air?"
Does "you Colbert doubters" mean me? Again folks, this post is a joke, not meant to be taken seriously, and certainly not meant to be a criticism of Mr. Colbert.
I was poking fun at the St. Blog's recent obsession with Mr. Colbert, not condemning Mr. Colbert himself. I have no idea whether Mr. Colbert is "one of us", and really don't care. As if there is a monolithic "orthodoxy" among the St. Blog's faithful that one could possess to qualify as "one of us". There's clearly not.
It's a JOKE aimed at the bloggers, not at Mr. Colbert.
Jay (AKA "The Beaten Up One"),
Man, you gots the WORST luck! I know how to diffuse this ugly situation.... post more pictures of Adriana Lima!
