Our Guys Side With the Terrorists ... Again
From Catholic World News:
Jerusalem's Christian leaders decry Israeli raids in GazaMy Comments:
Jul. 12 (CWNews.com) - Christian Church leaders in Jerusalem have joined in a public protest against Israeli military raids in the Gaza Strip.
While condemning the abduction of an Israel soldier, and the terrorist attacks on Jewish settlers, the Christian leaders said that the Israeli military response has been "without proportion or justification."
"Events in our lands are against law and reason," the Church officials said. They cited the deaths of 48 Palestinians -- including 27 civilians -- in the space of a week, and the Israeli capture of 28 Palestinian political officials.
"All violence and aggression against human dignity-- whether Israeli or Palestinian-- must stop," the Christian leaders insisted. They said that Palestinians must recognize Israel's right to security, and in turn Israeli should recognize the damage cause by "the desprivation of freedom to the Palestinian people." The declaration was signed by 13 Catholic, Orthodox, Anglican, and Lutheran leaders in Jerusalem, including Patriarch Michel Sabbah, the Latin-rite Patriarch of Jerusalem; Father Pierbattista Pizzaballa, the head of the Franciscan Custody of the Holy Land; and the Maronite Catholic Archbishop Paul Sayah of Haifa.
When one begins to understand the level of moral equivalence involved in these constant condemnations of Israel for protecting itself from unprovoked terrorist attacks, it's a little difficult not to assume at least a little residual anti-semitism on the part of some of these Catholic leaders claiming to speak on behalf of the Church.

Condemning revaunchist policy is no more anti-semitic as it is anti-islamic. How can you say that, in condemning both side's egregious violence, someone is taking sides? Pat Robertson, get thee behind me..
As witnesses to God's Mercy, we should be encouraging the same selfless love and mercy in others. While I understand Israel's need for payback, it's just going to escalate as the muslims are well known for their need for "tit for tat." I also understand mulsim resentment with the poverty they live with, and the continual harassment by Israeli armed forces. But we need to get beyond the human rationalizations and point all to Christ, whose example we should proclaim as the answer for all our difficulties.
The status quo will not do.
"How can you say that, in condemning both side's egregious violence, someone is taking sides?"
Yeah, the usual "even-handed" condemnation that comes from the likely suspects every time Israel takes action to protect itself. NOT. But even if these guys acted even-handedly in such a situation, that would still be outrageous.
From the story:
While condemning the abduction of an Israel soldier, and the terrorist attacks on Jewish settlers, the Christian leaders said that the Israeli military response has been "without proportion or justification."
That, my friend, is called moral equivalency. There is NO moral equivalency between terrorist acts and a sovereign nation protecting itself from such. It smacks of those who condemned the U.S. for its "violent attacks" against the Taliban in response to 9/11.
Israel has freely given away land that it has aquired via right of conquest (which it acquired, again, after being attacked unprovoked) in order to achieve a peaceful solution to the Middle East conflict. And this is how it is repaid for its gestures. More terrorist attacks.
Sorry. This is NOT a situation that calls for even-handedness. As if these so-called Christian leaders could even manage being even-handed when it comes to Israel.
I have to disagree. These are people close to the situation, not getting their information filtered through the American media. Israel has not been a friend of the tiny Christian presence in the Holy Land. Granted, the muslims are not either.
A pox on both their houses, the muslims for their terrorism, and the Israelis for their frequent overreactions and unjust means used to defend themselves. Bombing Beirut, as they are doing today, is not a moral response to the kidnapping of two soldiers.
While we might agree that Israel has a right to exist, it certainly has no right to kill innocent people indiscriminately, anymore than the jihadis have a right to kill innocents.
As Catholics, we should be very wary of getting fully behind either party: the fanatical muslims, or the secularist, socialist Israelis.
Israelis, by the way, who have not hesitated to spy on us. They keep us at arm's length; we should certainly not want to climb into bed with them.
Apparently, Israel is the only country in the Middle East where the Christian population is actually GROWING.
