Virginia Bishops Endorse Postcard Campaign

From the Arlington Catholic Herald:
This June, the U.S. Senate is likely to vote on proposed text for a Protection of Marriage Amendment to the federal Constitution. The language under consideration provides, “Marriage in the United States shall consist only of the union of a man and a woman. Neither this Constitution, nor the constitution of any State, shall be construed to require that marriage or the legal incidents thereof be conferred upon any union other than the union of a man and a woman.”

To help Catholics convey support for this measure to their senators, the Knights of Columbus has initiated a national postcard campaign that is endorsed by the U.S. Catholic bishops. Ten million postcards have been printed and are available to parishes across the country at no cost. This month, the Knights will distribute these postcards through their system of state, district, and local councils.

The Virginia bishops have highlighted the importance of this advocacy initiative in their own dioceses. To jumpstart this effort, Arlington Bishop Paul S. Loverde recently sent a letter to all priests in the diocese stating, “If you are contacted by your local Knights’ council regarding this campaign, I highly encourage you to facilitate participation at your parish -- by placing the postcards in bulletins, making them available in the vestibule, or arranging for volunteers to collect completed postcards at tables outside the church.”

The letter also advised, “If you do not receive a call from your local Knights’ council but would still like to participate in the campaign or learn more about it, Jeff Caruso, Director of the Virginia Catholic Conference (VCC), would be glad to assist you. He can be reached at (804) 225-8565 or at jeff@vacatholic.org.”
For more information about this campaign or about other public-policy initiatives supported by Virginia’s Catholic bishops, readers are encouraged to visit the VCC Website (www.vacatholic.org) and join the Legislative Action Center, which provides regular e-mail alerts and updates to those who complete a short sign-up form. This Website includes downloadable educational materials developed by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops on the importance of marriage-protection provisions. Later this year, the VCC will also offer parishes materials relating to a proposed state marriage amendment, which will be the subject of a statewide ballot question this November.
My Comments:

This action seems to me to be a clear violation of the spirit of separation of church and state in America.

What is the alternative to giving homosexuals equal civil rights? Does the church want to further alienate this segment of society from its congregations? To by default, encourage lives of hiding their sexual orientation and the certain anxiety and guilt that will pervade their lives? Of not being supportive of monogamous committed loving relationships – and which by default encourages promiscuity? To increase the atmosphere of bias, discrimination and prejudice toward individuals, who by no fault of their own, happen to be homosexual?

To me this is a drift away from the love, caring, and non-judgmental behavior that is at the core of the message brought to the world by Jesus. And it flies in the face of common sense, and the enlightened science available today.
