Going Batty - Redux
A few weeks ago, I blogged about a bat that had somehow made its way into our home.
Well, a couple of nights ago, another bat (or maybe even the same one) found its way into our house. The one common denominator is that both times our basement door was left open, so they must be coming in from that cave-like space.
One significant difference between this time and last time is how I was able to get rid of the bat, who was flying frantically around our kitchen. Basically, I didn't have to do a thing. My rodent-killing Border Terrier, Wallace, did all the work. (NOTE: that is not Wallace in the picture, but it looks like him - you can see parts of Wallace - still with winter coat - at the bottom of the photo here.)
While I was trying to get to a window to open it up, Wallace waited for the bat to swoop down within striking distance. He leapt up a couple of feet into the air and snatched the bat in mid-flight. Impressive. Wallace dispatched the bat fairly quickly with a couple of crunches.
What a good dog! I scooped the bat up into a plastic grocery bag and took it out with the trash.
If you'd like more information on Border Terriers, read "The Border Terrier in Brief".

Good doggie.
I'm all for keeping that basement door closed.
Another good reason to have dogs ... aside from the benefit of never having to pick up food you've dropped.
I'd keep that basement door closed too... I'd want to keep the local bats safe from that terrier. (Hey, any critter that eats mosquitoes is, IMHO, on the side of good ! )
Of course, as a rat owner I am less than enthusiastic about terriers anyway...
Great dog story! I expect that your dog has had an annual rabies shot, but you might want to have him checked by a vet. A friend's dog recently chewed up a rabbit and was later found to have worms.
I think the pope needs a Border Terrier. If they can catch a flying bat a flying zucchetto should be no problem.
Wallace has another 2 years on his rabies vaccine, and he's on Sentinel, which should take care of any parasites.
Quick, Wallace. To the batcave!
