Some Old Habits (and Old Priests) Die Hard

Some news from my former diocese - the Diocese of Richmond. The new bishop in Richmond, Francis X. DiLorenzo, has made significant improvements to the diocese, since taking over for Walter F. Sullivan, a man who for 30 years was considered one of the most liberal prelates in the country.

Nevertheless, it seems some old habits die hard. The following blurb appeared in The Catholic Virginian, the diocesan newspaper for the Diocese of Richmond:

Marty Haugen to give workshop at Incarnation

Marty Haugen, a "composer of liturgical music" [ED: "scare" quotation marks added by the editor] for Catholic and Protestant [ED: well, that explains a LOT] denominations, will present a workshop on Saturday, March 4, from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Church of the Incarnation in Charlottesville [ED: this parish has been nicknamed "Incantation" by one of my co-workers who lives in Charlottesille but attends a different parish].

Also check out bullet point #6 under "Clergy announcements". Looks like Father Thomas Quinlan (a.k.a "TQ", a.k.a. "the motorcycle priest") has finally been put out to pasture:
Rev. Thomas Quinlan, a retired priest of the Diocese of Richmond, can no longer celebrate the sacraments publicly. He can celebrate Mass privately. Bishop DiLorenzo said he took this action as a response to Father Quinlan’s behavior that has “engendered anxiety and emotional upset which interferes with an individual’s religious experience.”

Earlier this evening I was talking to my brother in Roanoke, giving him the details behind the action towards TQ, and as I told him regarding the Haugen article; "one step at a time." Bp DiLorenzo has a mess to clean up. Also noteworthy (and on the plus side)is that the clergy announcements also mentioned that Fr. Damian will no longer be chaplain at St. Benedict's Chapel (the Tridentine parish in the Tidewater area). But it doesn't mentioned why. Number one, Fr. Damian is almost 90 and semi-retired; and nuber two, they're going to be staffed by a priest from the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter. This was attempted under the former regime, but their efforts were blocked. So Iguess it's 2 steps forward; on step back.
