I saw it coming. Actually, all the way back in 1979 or so, Roddenberry wrote, in Kirk's voice, a denial of the (already then-) rumored homosexual affair between Kirk & Spock, in his novelization of Star Trek: The Motion Picture.
It included Kirk's remark that he was too smart to take as a lover someone who was sexual aroused only once in every seven years.
