Democrats Striving to Regain the “Catholic Vote.”

(Hat tip: David at Catholics in the Public Square)

From Catholic News Agency:
Richmond, Feb. 01, 2006 (CNA) - The Democratic Party is intensifying efforts to reach out to Catholic voters, according to the Boston Globe. There was evidence yesterday when Virginia's newly installed governor delivered the response to President Bush's State of the Union address.

While it is obvious the Democrats' deep commitment to abortion rights has eroded its support among Catholics, and the party still maintains its firm support of a right ot abortion.

The Democratic National Committee is working with newly formed Catholic political groups in 10 states. On Capitol Hill, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, a Catholic, has formed a group to identify ways Democrats can speak about social issues and faith.

My Comments:
How many times have we seen some incarnation of this story since the 2004 elections? Have you seen any proof that Democrats are actually "striving to regain the Catholic vote", apart from news stories asserting the "fact"?

I think maybe the Demorats believe that if they keep saying that they are "striving to regain the Catholic vote" and "speaking about" social issues and faith, that we'll just start believing it and voting accordingly. Fat chance. Actions speak louder than words.

Near as I can tell, they seem to be encouraging new chapters of "Catholics for a Free Choice" peopled by lapsed Catholic Democrats, and claiming that that constitutes outreach to those of us who actually believe Church teachings.

I can't think it'll poll well come election day.
