Bob Casey, Jr. - The Apple Who Fell Far From the Tree

Earlier this evening, I received the following statement in an email from Joseph Cella of Fidelis.org:
Fidelis today criticized U.S. Senate candidate Bob Casey, Jr. (D-PA) for the growing number of ties to radical liberal interest groups and individuals supporting his campaign that are openly hostile to the Catholic Church’s teachings on faith and morals.

Casey is the son of the late pro-life Catholic Governor of Pennsylvania, Bob Casey, Sr. Governor Casey is a hero in pro-life movement for signing pro-life legislation and for being booed off stage after taking a stand against his party’s pro-abortion plank at the 1992 Democratic National Convention.

Now, Bob Casey, Jr. is aiming to challenge Senator Rick Santorum (R-PA) and has received endorsements and contributions from People for the American Way, George Soros, the Human Rights Campaign, Hillary Rodham Clinton’s PAC and MoveOn.org.

These groups and individuals support assisted suicide, abortion on demand, same sex marriage and are opposed to the public display of religious symbols during the holidays.

This Saturday evening, Casey is serving as the keynote speaker at the annual Human Rights Campaign gala in Philadelphia. The Human Rights Campaign is a radical homosexual activist organization that has collected and donated nearly $100,000 to his campaign.

In a letter to sent to Casey this morning, Fidelis President Joseph Cella stated: “We respectfully call on you to return the campaign contributions from these groups and individuals that are openly hostile to the teachings of the Catholic Church, and reject any future contributions that are made to your campaign. We also ask that you respectfully decline speaking invitations from such organizations, publicly distance yourself from their endorsements and oppose the radical policy goals of these organizations and individuals.” Click here to read the full letter. You can read the press release Fidelis sent out regarding Casey’s ties to the radical left by clicking here.

It is sad that the very organizations and individuals that blocked Bob Casey’s Dad from speaking at the 1992 convention for being pro-life are now endorsing and funding his campaign. The apple seems to have fallen very far from the tree.
My Comments:
Bob Casey, Jr. claims to be pro-life. But talk is cheap. The best way to push a pro-life agenda if he is elected to the Senate would be to vote to confirm Supreme Court Justices that are strict constructionist, and therefore have a willingness to re-examine Roe v. Wade and its progeny.

But what does Bob Casey have to say about Senate Democrats who have been obstructing such nominees to the federal courts? Casey says he supports the filibuster of judicial nominees in order to force more bipartisanship in the selection of judges - in other words, a judge should have to pass muster with BOTH parties. Not likely to get many anti-Roe judges with that philosophy.

Furthermore, Casey has also stated that he "was comfortable with the Democrat Party's position on abortion, stem cell research, and the filibustering of President Bush's federal judicial nominees".

Finally, while liberal after liberal, abortion advocate after abortion advocate, attacked Samuel Alito as an extremist for his opinion in Planned Parenthood v. Casey - the landmark abortion case named for Bob Casey, Sr. - Bob Casey, Jr. sat by silently, earning for himself the nickname "Silent Bob".

But all this doesn't really matter, apparently, to those pro-lifers who are bound and determined to make Rick Santorum "pay" for supporting the re-election of the man who successfully shepherded the Supreme Court nominations of John Roberts and Samuel Alito through the Judiciary Committee - Arlen Specter.

Everytime I hear the words pro-life Democrat my skepticism circuits go in full power mode. Remember how Sen Reid was promoted as being pro-life? So pro-life that he worked overtime to defeat Roberts and Alito.

Not that many Republicans are much better, but at least they for the most part vote pro-life - though how much conviction is behind it is another matter. And when it comes to ESCR the are definately breaking off from the pro-life movement (Sen Talent).

Losing Sen. Santorum would be a major loss since he walked the walk and talked the talk.

Casey is at least strong enough that he admits he is pro-life openly which is more that can be said of most democrats. If he is elected he could help to pull the democratic party back to the pro-life side. I'm discussing this very issue on my blog (bob casey jr. blog).
