Dumping Dubya
I'm with Steve Dillard (all except for the reservation of judgment part, which he included in his update) - I am hereby done with George W. (just like his daddy) Bush. I voted for Bush to get judges like Scalia and Thomas - which is what he promised in both the 2000 and 2004 elections. Instead, we've been handed 2 blank-slate nominees, which, given the Bushies' track record on blank-slate nominees, gives me no hope for anything other than another couple of David Souters.
Can anyone say with any confidence that the 2 Bush nominees will shift the Court significantly rightward? I doubt seriously that Roberts is as conservative as the Chief Justice he has replaced. And I have no idea whether this Miers person is as conservative as Sandra Day O'Connor, who was at least conservative on federalism and separation-of-powers issues. What I do know is that neither nominee is the Scalia or Thomas that we were promised.
I have been willing to stomach this Administration's excessive government spending, insane border policies, an increasingly Wilsonian foreign policy, etc., all because I believed George W. Bush when he said he wanted judges like the 2 Supreme Court Justices for whom I have the most admiration. Well, now we know that Dubya is just like Daddy when it comes to keeping campaign promises.
Read my lips, Dubya Bush: you just lost one of your strongest supporters.
UPDATE:
As usual, Zach Brissett captures my feelings on the matter perfectly:

I'm also sick over this one.
It was a wussy decision. I can't understand why as he is a lame duck. So what if he sends up a staunch conservative orginalist judge. So they get Borked. Send up another one and let them get Borked too. And then, do it again. Let all the poisons flow out the Senate judiciary committee. Someon will eventually blink. W blinked before it even began. I know many people who held their nose and voted for W, explicitly because of this particular issue.
More importantly, I think the topics of judicial activism, legislation from the bench, and relying on foreign law need to be discussed on the national level, and this would have been an excellent oppurtunity.
Was Mike Brown unavailable?
Jay, I wish with all my heart that I could contradict you.
I think it may be time for a new political party.
Impeach him!
