College Honoring Hillary Clinton Declared "No Longer Catholic"

(CNSNews.com) - The Catholic college that offered to give U.S. Democratic Sen. Hillary Clinton of New York an honorary doctoral degree was formally dropped as a Roman Catholic institution on Thursday.

Two sources have confirmed for Cybercast News Service that Marymount Manhattan College (MMC) in New York City will no longer be listed in "The Official Catholic Directory," which identifies institutions formally recognized as Catholic.

My Comments:
Wow. A bishop that actually takes Ex Corde Ecclesiae seriously.

If you get a chance, take the time to read The National Catholic Register's investigative series on Ex Corde Ecclesiae and the Mandatum at Catholic colleges and universities.

Wow, let's pray more bishops follow suit. I remember years ago when I was in high school and contemplating colleges, getting a hold of a Georgetown catalog. My parents told me I could go anywhere I wanted (assuming I was accepted). They then made it abundantly clear that VA state schools were really good and realy cheap (at least they were in 1987). I took the hint and I'm glad I took the hint. If I had gone to a Catholic college I might have lost my faith. Though as a med student, I'd like for bishops to also crack down on CINO hospitals.

Mike,
I've said to a number of Catholic parents who have asked where to send their college-bound children that, because of the Dominican presence at St. Thomas Aquinas parish in Charlottesville, UVA is as good as or better than sending your kid to a Catholic college or university (especially given the sorry state of Catholic "higher" education).

Rick,
We can only hope they keep getting better and better.

Jay,
I worked in the Urology Dept at UVA from 1998-2001, and at first avoided, St. Thomas because I didn't care too much for the Newman Community when I was an udergrad at Tech (invalid matter being used for the Eucharist, tie-dyed vestments, the names of heretics being mentioned in the litany of the saints, etc.). So I eventually defected in grad school to St. Mary's in town. However, one weekend I attended mass there just to see how it compared to the other parishes in C'ville, and was pleasantly suprised. The congregation wasn't all students. In fact at the 8am mass which I usually attended, it was mostly non-students. I also liked the fact that the daily mass was at 5:15pm which made it very convenient for those of us with jobs. That was also my first experience praying the liturgy of the hours. I also experienced my first Eucharistic processions there on Holy Thursday and Corpus Christi. (I've yet to see one on Corpus Christi in any of the other parishes I've attended in the diocese of Richmond) So as much as it pains me as a Hokie to admit this, UVA would be fairly safe for Catholic students (unless you attend Tech and have a car and can drive to St. Mary's every weekend where you can sit with a few other Newman refugees (who probably grew up in the Diocese of Arlington)).

The Times report said that the Official Catholic Directory "has almost biblical status". I guess that was what the radtrad priest was mumbling when I could not hear him... "the lesson is from OCD 26..."
