"My Mass Kit"

At Southern Appeal, Feddie has a question about the item above:
I have mixed feelings about this sort of thing.

Thoughts?
Sarah and I decided a few weeks ago that we would buy this for Jamie's First Communion gift next year. Jamie wants to be a priest (and has aspired to that vocation since he was 2 years old), and we want to encourage him in any way we can. He would absolutely love a gift like this.

But I must say that we are a little put off by the price.

UPDATE (6 April)
This Mass kit is cheaper ($67 rather that $89) with more realistic-looking replicas:

A must for every Catholic home and classroom. Use for altar boy training, or First Communion preparation. For children ages 3-12. Kit includes

  • lesson plan book with activity sheets
  • brass chalice 4 1/2"
  • brass paten 3 1/4"
  • brass crucifix 4"
  • brass and glass sanctuary light 4 1/2"
  • brass snuffer 10"
  • brass set of 4 bells
  • brass match tray
  • brass censer 5"
  • glass cruets (pair) 4"
  • glass finger bowl
  • glass votive candles (pair)
  • brass incense boat w/spoon 2 1/4"
  • incense grains and instant lighting charcoal
  • patterns for making a wooden altar
  • I think maybe we'll get Jamie this one, instead.

I love that it has a thurible.

Wow - that is expensive. It must not have been made in China. That's a good thing BTW.

That's CRAZY to spend that amount of money. We "played Mass" when we were growing up (as most the Catholic kids did), and no one went out and purchased special stuff. Just get creative and assemble your own.

You can make your own thurible very easily with a bit of chain and a incense burner from WalMart. The rest is easy.

We have to get him something for First Communion anyway, and this seems like the perfect gift for him. We're hoping for a couple of things:

    (1) that the price for this product will drop over the next year, and

    (2) that Jamie's grandparents will contribute to the cost of the gift. (None of them are Catholic and probably don't know the first thing about what to give a kid for a First Communion gift, so we may just ask them to "co-gift" this with us.)

I purchased the "mini" mass kit for my son's 2nd grade parish school as a gift. I also bought the child-size vestment patterns. All in an effort to increase the chance of fostering vocations. Money well spent if a child's vocation is fostered. I don't see any difference between this and child-size pots and pans or food.
