Deal Hudson: "Huckabee Forgets Compassionate Conservatisim"

In the heat of the South Carolina primary battle, Mike Huckabee has forgotten he is the candidate of "compassionate conservatism" by signing a pledge to send all illegal aliens home. This is the kind of thing that proves that Huckabee is not the "most Catholic" of the candidates, as some people have claimed. I don't have any other nominees for the "most Catholic" crown, but Huckabee, by signing this pledge, has lost the compassionate patina that first made him so attractive. He has moved away from the Catholic principles that inform of the issue of immigration and refugees.(emphasis added)
Romney made this move weeks ago.
I do not agree with much of the the USCCB's rationale for their immigration policy, but I agree with much of the policy itself and many of the core principles behind it. (I do not agree that the economic need of immgrants trumps the right of country to keep secure borders!)
My Comments:
This is yet another in a series of Hudson pieces at InsideCatholic criticizing Huckabee's candidacy. Unlike a couple of the other ones, this criticism may actually hold water.

Methinks Mr. Hudson needs to tell us who he's for. He's clearly against Huckabee, but Huckabee is not the only one worthy of criticism. Still it seems that Hudson thinks he's the only one worth taking the time to criticize.
I'm thinking he's not very objective with these articles.
ON this I agree. I am still supporting Huckabee but for various reasons I was not happy with that.
I suspect that Huckabee thinks he has wriggle room to moderate on this. However I still think he sends a bad signal and he should not have done it.
One other factor. True it might help Huckabee win South Carolina but what about Florida? Evanglical Hispanics and Catholics might fly to Rudy or McCain.
I think it was the wrong move on many levels
Hi guys, Deal Hudson here. First, I have said it before but let me say it again, I don't think Huckabee is anti-Catholic, I think he has associated with them and needs to repudiate anti-Catholicism more clearly. Second, if you look on my Theocon blog you will see that my fellow blogger Marjorie Campbell is a big booster of Romney while Marc Nadeau likes McCain. I have made it clear that I oppose Giuliani period. As for the others, I will make my preferences explicit in due time.
The thing about Huckabee is that he seems to advocate positions totally on the other end of how he governed.
He was weak on immigration so now he supports total deportation.
He raised taxes and now he is for the fair tax.
He once advocated returning abortion to the states only and now wants a constitutional amendment.
He supported normalization with Iran and now speaks of the "Gates of hell" if they fire on us.
